English version: I vow that when I, a disciple, approach the end of my life, my mind will not be inverted, confused, or lose mindfulness. May my body and mind be free from all suffering, and may I experience joy as if entering into meditative absorption (dhyana). May the holy assembly appear before me, and may I, relying on the fundamental vow of the Buddha, be reborn in the highest grade of the highest class in the land of Amitabha (Amitabha). Having arrived in that land, may I attain the six supernormal powers (abhijna), return to the ten directions, and save suffering beings. As the realms of empty space and the Dharma realm are endless, so too are my vows. Having made this vow, I wholeheartedly take refuge in Amitabha (Amitabha). The assembly, desiring to create the karma for rebirth in the West, should sit alone and contemplate in the early evening. Do not say that you will reside in Jambudvipa (Jambudvipa, referring to the world we live in) for a long time, for there will be a day when all is impermanent. Life is like a candle in the wind, or a flash of lightning in a stone. Hearing that the body is strong and healthy, one does not practice diligently; digging a well when thirsty is hoping for water in vain. May I, together with all beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss. Now, contemplating this body, it is truly repulsive, a mere name for an impure form. Three hundred shattered bones support it; where in this entire body is there a piece of truth? Applying fragrant powders to the body is never enough, but ultimately it will become dust underground. Afflictions blaze fiercely without ceasing, ultimately leading to wandering in the three evil realms. I universally urge all in this practice place to sincerely recite the Buddha's name and enter the true gate. May I, together with all beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss. The six thieves of greed, anger, and delusion are not false; wandering thoughts follow this foul body. In dreams, one goes every which way, but suddenly awakens to stillness and emptiness. The four elements are impermanent and return to dirt; where do the soul and spirit scatter? In life, wealth is used by others; one only gets paper and clay money for oneself. Therefore, the Buddha is in the Western Land, earnestly advising us to engrave this in our hearts. May I, together with all beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss. With utmost sincerity, I take refuge in Amitabha (Amitabha) of the West. Having made the vow to be born in the Buddha-land, may the holy assembly universally know. In this life, having received the Buddha's teachings, I dare not doubt again. If one practices diligently for one day or seven days, one will surely be promised a place on a lotus flower in the West. May I, together with all beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss. The joy of the Pure Land is unattended, while the suffering of hell is eagerly sought. Hearing one word of evil, one does not hesitate to die, but one is unwilling to sincerely seek the good Dharma. English version: Eighteen hells of the nose, when will the cycle of suffering end? May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss (referring to Amitabha Buddha's Pure Land). Let us return, the land of demons is not a place to linger. Wandering through countless eons, all six realms (the realms of gods, humans, asuras, animals, hungry ghosts, and hell beings) have been experienced. Everywhere there is nothing else, only the sound of birth and death is heard. Therefore, after this life, enter that city of Nirvana (the ultimate state of liberation in Buddhism, referring to escaping the cycle of rebirth). May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss. Contemplate that Land of Ultimate Bliss of Amitabha Buddha (the principal Buddha of the Western Pure Land), vast and spacious, a city made of countless treasures. Clouds of flowers form rows without number, prepared to welcome the virtuous beings of this land. In the evil world of the five turbidities (referring to the turbidity of the age, views, afflictions, beings, and life), if one wishes to cultivate the ten virtuous deeds (not killing, not stealing, not committing adultery, not lying, not speaking harshly, not gossiping, not using abusive language, not being greedy, not being angry, not holding wrong views), the first thing is to wholeheartedly recite the Amitabha Sutra. Reciting the Buddha's name with heart and mouth, without ever being tired or satisfied, at the end of life, Bodhisattvas will naturally come to welcome you. May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss. With utmost sincerity, I take refuge in Amitabha Buddha of the Western Pure Land. Carefully observe that in the West there is a country, in that country there is a Buddha, named Amitabha (Amitabha Buddha). Once seated, he preaches the Dharma for as many kalpas (Buddhist units of time) as there are sands in the Ganges River, universally cutting off all demonic obstacles for the world. Ascending the holy seat in the City of Ultimate Bliss, the gods surround him, all coming forth. Eighty-four thousand Bodhisattvas, holding flowers and fruits, scatter them in the Saha world (referring to the world we live in, which is full of imperfections and suffering). May I, together with all sentient beings, be reborn in the Land of Bliss. Universally for the Brahma heavens, the Shakra heavens, the Four Heavenly Kings, the eight classes of gods and dragons (eight types of protective deities in Buddhism), the lords of emperors, human kings, teachers, monks, parents, and virtuous friends, all sentient beings in the Dharma realm, may we cut off the three obstacles (karmic obstacles, retributive obstacles, afflictive obstacles), and together be reborn in the country of Amitabha Buddha, taking refuge and repenting. All conditioned things are impermanent, they are subject to arising and ceasing. With arising and ceasing extinguished, quiescence is bliss. The Tathagata (Buddha) attains Nirvana, forever severing birth and death. If one can listen with utmost sincerity, one will always obtain immeasurable joy. Namo (homage to) the original teacher Shakyamuni Buddha (the founder of Buddhism) and all the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha). I now bow my head in reverence (a very respectful form of prostration), dedicating the merit and vowing to be reborn in the Land of Immeasurable Life (referring to Amitabha Buddha's Pure Land). Namo to all the Three Jewels in the ten directions, the three periods of time, throughout the empty space, pervading the Dharma realm, in lands as numerous as dust motes. I now bow my head in reverence, dedicating the merit and vowing to be reborn in the Land of Immeasurable Life. Namo to Amitabha Buddha of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. May all beings take refuge in the Buddha, therefore I prostrate, wishing to be born in that land.
