Merit of Paying Homage to the Buddha: If there are good men and good women who commit the four grave offenses, the five rebellious acts, slander the Three Jewels, and commit the four Parajika offenses, their sins are heavy. Suppose the Jambudvipa (Earth)'s surface were transformed into fine dust, and each particle of dust became a kalpa (eon), the sins of these people would be as numerous as those kalpas. If they recite the name of one Buddha and pay homage, all the aforementioned sins will be extinguished. The merit of these people is inconceivable. English version The Sutra of the Names of the Buddhas, the Twelve Buddha Names, Divine Spells, Measuring Merit, Eliminating Obstacles, and Eradicating Sins. Namo (Homage to) all Buddhas of the past, present, and future, in the ten directions and three times. I take refuge and repent. I sincerely repent. All the Buddhas and World Honored Ones in all such worlds constantly abide in the world. May these World Honored Ones have compassion on me. May they remember me. May they know and bear witness to me. If, in my previous lives, from beginningless birth and death until now, I have committed various sins, whether I did them myself, or instructed others to do them, or rejoiced at their doing; if I have taken the property of stupas or Sanghas, or taken the property of the Sangha of the four directions, whether I took it myself, or instructed others to take it, or rejoiced at their taking; or if I have committed the five rebellious acts, the heavy sins of uninterrupted karma, whether I did them myself, or instructed others to do them, or rejoiced at their doing; if I have practiced the ten non-virtuous deeds, whether I did them myself, or instructed others to do them, or rejoiced at their doing; all the sinful obstacles I have created, whether concealed or unconcealed, which should cause me to fall into the hells, the realms of hungry ghosts, the animal realms, and all the evil destinies, border regions, ** and Mleccha (barbarians, those who do not follow Brahmanical norms), all such sinful obstacles in these places, I now repent. Now, may all the Buddhas and World Honored Ones know and bear witness to me. May they remember me. I again make this declaration before all the Buddhas and World Honored Ones: If in this life or in other lives, I have ever practiced giving, or upheld pure precepts, even to the extent of giving a handful of food to an animal, or cultivated pure conduct, all the roots of goodness I possess, all the roots of goodness for accomplishing sentient beings, all the roots of goodness for cultivating Bodhi (Enlightenment), and all the roots of goodness for unsurpassed wisdom, I gather them all together, calculate and measure them, and dedicate them all to Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment). As the Buddhas of the past, future, and present have made dedications, so do I also make this dedication. Having made this dedication, I take refuge in and pay homage to the Triple Gem. I repent of all sins, I rejoice in all blessings, And with the merit of inviting the Buddhas, I vow to attain unsurpassed wisdom. The Buddhas of the past, present, and future are the most supreme among sentient beings, An ocean of immeasurable merit, I take refuge, join my palms, and bow in reverence. All universally recite: The Tathagata's wondrous form is unequaled in the world, Incomparable and inconceivable, therefore I now respectfully bow.
