From the Ornament of the Sutras, it says: 'The aspiration of the steadfast is, accompanied by intention and desire.' This refers to the mind accompanied by the intention to pursue a specific goal. The goal to be pursued is also divided into two categories: higher realms (mngon mtho) and definite goodness (nges legs). Among these, there are also three divisions of enlightenment (byang chub gsum). But here, it refers to the ultimate state of definite goodness, called 'non-abiding nirvana' (mi gnas pa'i mya ngan las 'das pa), and only the latter, the two kayas (form body and dharma body) that are ultimately accomplished for the benefit of others. So, how is it that it is also said, 'May all be dedicated to the great enlightenment'? Since there is a way of dedication and also a way of wishing, 'May I attain enlightenment for the benefit of sentient beings,' what is the difference between the two? The difference between dedication and aspiration is that, firstly, dedication necessarily requires an object to be dedicated to; aspiration is included in dedication; but aspiration does not necessarily include dedication, because there are many aspirations that do not depend on an object, such as a hungry person seeking food. Secondly, the cause is the proximate cause - the awakening of the lineage, and the cooperative condition - dependent on compassion. As the Uttaratantra Shastra says: 'If there were no Tathagatagarbha, there would be no aversion to suffering, no desire for nirvana, and no aspiration.' In its commentary, Thogme Zhabs said: 'The conditions for awakening the lineage depend on the four wheels.' Furthermore, the Ornament of the Sutras says: 'If there is no root of compassion, pure white births will not occur, aspiration and desire, the moisture of compassion, is love.' Therefore, these causes and conditions depend on hearing the Dharma from a virtuous friend and properly contemplating the meaning of what is heard. As the Ornament of the Sutras says: 'The compassion of the Bodhisattva arises from cause, virtuous friend, and nature.' Therefore, the root of aspiration should be based on compassion itself. As that treatise says: 'Compassion, patience, and intention, and the arising of aspiration, fully ripen all sentient beings. The first is the root, the last has supreme fruit, this is the great tree of compassion.' Therefore, the proximate cause - the awakening of the Mahayana lineage, and the cooperative condition - the distinctions of aspiration aroused by compassion, the basis where these are planted, like fertile land, is the Thus-Gone-One (bde gsheg). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is called 'Essence of Earth' (ས་སྙིང་པོ།, Kṣitigarbha, Essence of Earth). It is necessary to explain the wisdom of the base period, as stated in the 'Ornament of the Sutras': 'It is motivated by wisdom.' And in its commentary: 'The base is wisdom.' And in the 'Dharma Collection Sutra': 'The realm of beginninglessness, is the abode of all dharmas, because of it all beings, also attain Nirvana.' Therefore, the seeds of all the dharmas of samsara must be placed on the Alaya consciousness. Because the seeds of all the dharmas of the pure side must be placed on the Dharmadhatu wisdom of the base period. After placing it in this way, long-term habituation will become inseparable from the mindstream of the habituator. As stated in the 'Pramāṇavārttika': 'Non-harm and true meaning, on the essence with reversal, even if one strives, it cannot be turned back, because the mind holds to that side.' So, how do ordinary people place the seeds of dharma on wisdom? Without being distracted by the mind that appears as grasper and grasped, merely by applying oneself to virtue, that meaning is accomplished. As stated in the 'Bodhicaryāvatāra': 'A person whose mind is distracted, dwells in the fangs of afflictions.' And 'Recitations and austerities, even if practiced for a long time, if done with a distracted mind, the wise say they are meaningless.' Therefore, the Dharmadhatu wisdom of the base period has many names such as the naturally abiding lineage, the habit of hearing, the uncontaminated seeds, and the Tathagatagarbha. It can also be said to have the characteristics of the six ayatanas (སྐྱེ་མཆེད།, āyatana, sensory sphere), because the clear and knowing aspect on the Alaya consciousness is placed there. Third, the characteristics of the result are divided into two: temporary and ultimate. First, the main thing is to take birth in samsara and benefit sentient beings, which can be accomplished through aspiration. As stated in the 'Ornament of the Sutras': 'Because it is accomplished only by mind, from the mind quickly and with fruit, it accomplishes the future meaning, it should be known as the cause.' Second, it is to manifest the state of complete benefit for oneself and others. As stated in the 'Prajnaparamita Sutra', without perfecting the aspiration, the true ultimate cannot be manifested. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
