19-3-3a This is to determine whether one can rely on one's own power to guide (things). The second part is to refute the currently popular views, and to follow the views of the source of reason, establishing one's own views, thereby showing that conclusions can be reached through debate. The first part is: Dārtrika says: 'If the self-nature (bdag nyid) of an object (gZhal bya) measured by a valid means of cognition (Pramāṇa) does not exist on the thing, then this valid means of cognition cannot rely on its own power to guide (things), this is the definition of a self-established valid means of cognition (rang las nges).’ Examples are subsequent inference (rjes dpag tshad ma) and habitual perception of blue root consciousness direct perception (sngo 'dzin dbang po'i mngon sum), etc. If a valid means of cognition cannot do that, then that is the definition of the second type of valid means of cognition. An example is: when there is doubt about whether a distant flickering red flame is fire, the root consciousness direct perception that perceives the thing as fire, etc.’ After defining it in this way, if one accepts the example as in the view of Dharmottara (Chos mchog), then that is self-contradictory. Specifically as follows: The example of a self-established valid means of cognition that you have just taken, as the subject (chos can), you should not be a self-established valid means of cognition, because if you are the object of a valid means of cognition, then you are not the object of a self-established valid means of cognition, because if that is the case, then you are not the object of a valid means of cognition. How do you acknowledge this reason? Then you must acknowledge that there is such a common basis (gzhi mthun), please point out which is the example? If you say it is the flickering red flame, then, as the subject, you should not be not self-established, because you are self-established. This pervasion (khyab pa) is established by valid means of cognition. If you admit it, then it is negated by self-contradiction. The way to acknowledge the truth of the reason is: because it is acknowledged that such an appearance is self-established. In this way, it is a reductio ad absurdum (thal 'gyur) that cannot be refuted with an answer. If the fire on the thing is such a common basis? Then, the direct perception at that time, as the subject, should cut off the superimposition (sgro 'dogs) on the fire on the thing, because it is a valid means of cognition. The reason and pervasion are acknowledged. The negation of the thesis (dam bca') exists in the valid means of cognition. 19-3-3b This is the second reductio ad absurdum. Some people who follow this view say: 'There is no object of a valid means of cognition that is established by others (gzhan las nges).’ This acknowledgment is self-contradictory, as follows: As the subject, you should not exist as the object of a valid means of cognition, because you do not exist as the object of a self-established valid means of cognition, nor do you exist as the object of a valid means of cognition established by others. This pervasion is established by valid means of cognition. The latter part of the reason is directly contradictory. If you admit it, then, for the object that does not newly deceive itself, that is the definition of a valid means of cognition. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This contradicts what you desire. If the former reason is not established, then what is the object being measured that it refers to? To that, one might say: It is merely that burning red. Because the teacher Dharmottara has explicitly stated that direct perception (pratyakṣa) is necessarily derived from the appearance itself. If that is said, it is indeed so in reality, but you contradict yourself. Like this: The sense perception (indriya-pratyakṣa) of 'in reality' and so on, as the subject (chos can): If that burning red itself does not exist on the object, then it necessarily can, by its own power, infer that it will not arise itself. Because for the burning red, it is a self-generated valid cognition (pramāṇa). This is the third consequence of admitting the contradiction of the three spheres (subject, object, and action). Furthermore, such a direct perception, as the subject: it must be a self-generated valid cognition for the burning red. Because it is both self-generated and a valid cognition, having a common basis. If both reasons are admitted to be factually contradictory, then, as before, the three spheres are contradictory. These are contradictory to what has been admitted. Now, we will state what contradicts reason: In reality, when doubting whether it is sandalwood fire, the inference that there is fire where there is smoke far away from the sign of smoke, as the subject: it must be that characteristic. Because it is a self-generated valid cognition. The reason is admitted. If admitted, then both contradiction of valid cognition (pramāṇa virodha) and contradiction of admission (khyab pa tshad ma) occur. How so? As the subject: it must be able to infer sandalwood fire by its own power. Because it can infer by its own power that without sandalwood fire, it will not arise itself. The direct perception that you admitted as an example of other-generated cognition (gzhan las nges), must be able to infer by its own power that its object of measurement itself exists on the object. Because the inference just admitted can infer it. Now, we will also state what contradicts scripture: If one considers inferring infallibility (mi slu ba) by one's own power as the meaning of self-generation (rang nges), it fits the context of the scriptures. But this fits the intention of the great beings. If the meaning of infallibility is taken to be inferring what its object of measurement itself exists on the object, then all three other-generated valid cognitions taught by the teacher Dharmottara, as the subject: they must not be infallible knowledge. Because they do not infer what their object of measurement itself exists on the object. If admitted, it contradicts admitting the scriptures of the teacher Dharmottara as valid cognition. Furthermore, in reality, when doubting whether it is impermanent, the sense consciousness of blue --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
