Collected Teachings of the Great Scholar Shakya Chokden skc137: 'A Brief Summary on How to Establish Validity Through Pramana, Called 'Clearing the Darkness of the Mind'. A Brief Summary on How to Establish Validity Through Pramana, Called 'Clearing the Darkness of the Mind'. A Brief Summary on How to Establish Validity Through Pramana, Called 'Clearing the Darkness of the Mind'. The delightful garland of lotus-like Dharma talks, Together with the radiance of fame's jewel, May you bestow as an ornament, Upon the crowns of those endowed with wisdom and youth. I prostrate to that. After such praise, I will briefly explain the method of establishing validity through pramana. This includes what the meaning of the text is, and a detailed breakdown of the categories taught by the text. First, pramana is infallible knowledge. All pramanas are taught as non-deceptive awareness. So, how is that determined there? To this, there are three answers: From what is it determined to be awareness? From what is it determined to be non-deceptive? And how to dispel disputes about it? First, understanding one's own nature from oneself. Whatever is knowledge, then just by knowing its own nature, it does not need to be determined from another pramana. For example, even the Cārvākas do not dispute experiencing their own nature such as happiness. The pramanas just described are also knowledge, which is a contradictory determination. Second, from convention, it is indeed pramana. Convention is indeed non-deceptive. This is a difference in meaning. It is said that whatever is pramana, then it must be determined from convention that it is non-deceptive in whatever it is. For example, like the eye consciousness of an illusory image being attached to blue. All direct perception and inference are to be determined here as pramana. This is the reason of nature. Here, convention refers to certainty. There are three types of certainty: certainty from oneself, certainty from itself, and certainty from others. Examples of these are: inference, habitual direct perception of characteristics, and the cause of perceptual illusion. The knowers of these are as follows: For example, inference that understands sound as impermanent, the subject, its own non-deception about the impermanence of sound is determined from itself, because it itself determines the impermanence of sound. The habitual antecedent sense consciousness, the subject, its own non-deception about blue is determined from itself, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The definite cognition of blue immediately leads to its result, because one is not certain about blue oneself. In the Samkhya tradition, the direct perception of the sense faculty that apprehends sound, with respect to the impermanence of sound, is not deceptive, because it is ascertained by another valid cognition. Because the cognition that ascertains the impermanence of sound cannot immediately lead to its own result, since another valid cognition must mediate between you and it. Third, then the explanation of the characteristics of valid cognition in treatises would become meaningless, since the characteristic of non-deception on all bases of valid cognition can be ascertained from the valid cognition itself or from the cognition it produces. If one thinks so, then treatises are for dispelling confusion. Composing such treatises is necessary, because in order to dispel confusion about the term 'valid cognition,' it is sufficient to explain the reasoning of the term alone. Explaining the term alone is like this: Whatever is a newly arisen, non-deceptive knowledge can be given the name 'valid cognition,' like direct perception. The knowledge that newly realizes that where there is smoke, there is fire, from the sign of smoke, is also a newly arisen, non-deceptive knowledge. This is a reasoning of nature. In short, 'from the term, it is valid cognition itself,' this is from the perspective of the meaning of valid cognition; 'dispelling confusion,' this is from the perspective of the term of valid cognition. Second, regarding the system it reveals, including searching for the source from which the system of two valid cognitions arose, distinguishing the opposite meanings of the two, and exemplifying the distinctions of the bases. First, in the works of the great Dignāga, this system of two does not appear. In the root verses of the Pramāṇasamuccaya, the system of two does not explicitly appear, but some consider that through the verse 'knowing one's own essence from oneself,' it can be explained as showing the system of self-cognizing valid cognition that distinguishes the two. Among the commentaries, the clear distinction of the two systems is not clear, but it is clearer in the Alankara and the works of Dharmakirti. Most of the great translators and their followers do not approve of Dharmakirti's system, while Sakya Pandita expounds the two systems just like Dharmakirti. If later Tibetans think that if it is a valid cognition, then it necessarily eliminates the addition and subtraction to its object of measurement. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
