'All sentient beings possess the essence of the Buddha,' as stated, clarifies this meaning. If the clear and aware aspect of experience at the foundational level is not the actual essence of the Buddha, then how can it be said, 'The beginningless and endless Bodhisattva is Samantabhadra, the lord of all'? Such statements refer to the Buddha of intrinsic nature, but that does not accomplish Buddhahood, because, as it says, 'However, it is obscured by adventitious stains.' If so, what is the meaning of explaining it as the Buddha of intrinsic nature? It refers to the fact that if that primordial wisdom of the foundational level is cultivated as the body of the Buddha without being separated from the limb of the path of accumulation, then the clarity of the object of meditation will reach its ultimate perfection. As it says, 'Mind itself is the cause of the arising of the Buddha; do not seek the Buddha elsewhere.' Also, in the Ornament of the Sutras, it says, 'Suchness is in all, although without difference, it is purified; therefore, the Tathagata is its essence; all beings possess its essence.' The meaning of this text is also: All sentient beings, have the reason that the sutras say that they have the essence of the Tathagata, because when one's own mind is purified of defilements, it can become a Tathagata. It is not the actual essence of the Tathagata, because the essence does not possess the Tathagata. For example, just as sandalwood that does not possess a snake in its essence cannot be the essence of a snake. Secondly, it is a mistake to explain that the explicit teaching of the 'Discrimination of the Three Vows' states that sentient beings do not have a stream of consciousness free from defilements. As it says in that very text, 'When some say a stream of consciousness free from defilements, they refer to the clear aspect of the alaya-consciousness,' because the alaya-consciousness is said to be coextensive with existence. Even so, apart from the wisdom free from defilements of the Buddha's level, no other stream of consciousness free from defilements is explained as the essence, because it lacks what is called 'the main quality that establishes the essence—indivisible qualities.' Furthermore, the direct answer to the question of whether there is a subtle mind free from defilements in the mind-stream of a noble learner is the same as what has already been stated, because it has been said that it exists in the mind-stream of all sentient beings without needing to differentiate between subtle and gross, except for whether or not it possesses qualities. Even so, on the ten bhumis of the Great Vehicle, there is a new seeing and a new attainment of a part of the Dharmakaya (法身,Dharmakāya, dharmakāya, body of dharma), this is the Dharmadhatu (法界,Dharmadhātu, dharmadhātu, realm of dharma)... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As stated in hymns and the Mahaparinirvana Sutra and others, there is no contradiction in saying that even from the first bhumi (ground/level of realization) there is a portion of essence. Third, whether one believes that the two form bodies (Skt: rūpakāya) can fully attain Buddhahood or not, the marks and signs should not be regarded as material. This is because all the qualities of the Buddha's state are described as transcending the nature of particles; or because the very consciousness of the one who perceives is included; or because material phenomena are described as the result of karma and afflictions; and the marks and signs are explained as the ripened fruit of the complete accumulation of merit; and in general, the actual marks and signs must be explained as the definitive, ultimate marks and signs, which are described in works such as the Abhisamayalankara as the actual wisdom of the Buddha. If the conventional, relative marks and signs are included in the consciousness of other appearances of those to be tamed, how could there be any opportunity to explain them as material? This point has been well established. Here I say: With your pure intention, To fulfill the wishes of those seeking knowledge, You asked me to use concise words, Combining arguments and reasoning with rich meaning. I received the letter with the token, To repay the guru and the Dharma, And to respond to your inquiry, With pure intention, From the essence of the sutras and treatises, I summarized how to establish one's own view, And how to refute the views of others, And present this appropriate response. Nowadays, the popular talks, Mostly have not heard The teachings of wise teachers, Nor have they seen many treatises and The old traditions of Tibet, They are just passing on falsehoods, Spreading arrogant words from hearing without effort, For these people, it is like Milk in the throat, For those blessed by Saraswati, it is like Heavenly food. May the pure thoughts arising from this, Not be contaminated by the poison of clinging to names, May he and I together embark on The great path of the great treatises, May all like-minded, Intelligent friends, Their analysis, hearing, and Intention increase more and more! This is from the Golden Monastery in U-Tsang, A letter answering the inquiry By the learned and wise. May it be auspicious!
