Collected Teachings of the Great Abbot Shakya Chokden skc128: Answers to the Questions of the Excellent Mind Answers to the Questions of the Excellent Mind Sent as an answer to the questions asked by the supremely intelligent and learned one. Answers to the Questions of the Excellent Mind Namo Buddhaya! Your wise eyes shine upon all that is knowable, Your great stream of compassion descends upon the impoverished, With your powerful hands, you liberate all beings from existence and peace. I prostrate to Avalokiteśvara! Here, with pure intention and virtuous thoughts, Regarding the Buddha's teachings and numerous treatises, With the excellent wisdom born from extensive listening, I will explain the meaning of your questions as they are. This has two parts: questions and answers. The first has two parts: the direct questions and the questioner's examination of the questioner's thoughts. The first is: 'Sentient beings do not have the essence of the Buddha,' and 'The naturally abiding lineage is not the essence of the Sugata,' and 'The two form bodies are not fully enlightened Buddhas.' It is heard that these are the tenets of certain religious systems. Please provide a clear explanation of the basis for these claims, adorned with scripture and reasoning. That is the question. The second is: Regarding the meaning of sentient beings not having the essence, in the direct explanation of the 'Distinction of the Three Vows,' it is stated that sentient beings do not have a mind-stream free from defilements. Considering this, is it said that sentient beings do not have the essence of the Buddha? Is the naturally abiding lineage a negation, and therefore explained as not being the essence of the Buddha? Do they also believe that even in the continuum of noble learners, there is no subtle, undefiled wisdom? Furthermore, although the wisdom of the form body is the actual Buddha, the marks and signs are inanimate objects, so is it explained that the meaning of expanding intelligence in knowledge is incomplete? That is the examination. The second part, explaining the answer, has two parts: answering the direct questions and showing that the thoughts examined by the questioner are not entirely correct. First, answering the direct questions, has two parts: the basis for sentient beings not having the essence of the Buddha and the basis for the two form bodies not being fully enlightened Buddhas. First, regarding the basis for sentient beings having the essence of the Buddha, has two parts: the unacceptable identification of the essence according to other systems and the correct explanation of the essence. The first is: According to the words of the great chariot of the snowy mountains, Ngok Loden Sherab, the Buddha and the essence of the Buddha are not the same, the Buddha has complete power and other qualities, and has eliminated all --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The so-called abandonment and realization Dharmakāya (Spangs pa'i chos kyi sku nyid yin), the essence of the Buddha (sangs rgyas kyi snying po) does not necessarily need to be distinguished by abandonment and realization, but is the aspect of self-nature purity of negation (med dgag) that pervades all stages of the base, path, and fruit. As the scriptures say. However, all later scholars in the Land of Snows (gangs can ljongs, referring to Tibet) do not investigate 'what is the essence of the Buddha', but proclaim like an echo that 'all sentient beings possess this essence'. It is unreasonable to interpret the cognition of the essence of the Buddha as the aspect of the nature of reality negation, because it lacks both the valid scriptural authority and the existence of refuting reasoning. First, in all the scriptures and treatises on the cognition of the essence of the Buddha, they are all recognized from the perspective of qualities (yon tan, qualities) and inseparability (dbyer med, inseparable) from the essence, and there is not a single explanation from the perspective of negation. In the Uttaratantra (rgyud bla ma), although it uses three meanings as reasons to prove that all sentient beings have the Tathāgatagarbha (bde bar gshegs pa'i snying po, Tathāgatagarbha), this is only to reveal the intention of the essence, and cannot directly explain the essence itself. As Sakya Pandita (sa skya pa) said: 'Its intention is emptiness (stong nyid).' Secondly, from the perspective of refutation, this aspect of negation is nothing more than the general characteristic (spyi mtshan, general characteristic) and the exclusion of otherness (ldog pa gzhan sel), so it is parikalpita (kun btags, parikalpita), and cannot be pariniṣpanna (yongs grub, pariniṣpanna). Since it is not pariniṣpanna, it cannot directly explain the essence, because the essence of the essence is described as purity, bliss, permanence, and self (gtsang bde rtag bdag). Second, regarding the correct cognition of the essence, the self-nature purity of Dharmadhatu (dbyings rang bzhin gyis rnam par dag pa) is inseparable from the qualities and other dharmas, and this is called the essence of the Buddha. As the Uttaratantra says: 'What is the Tathāgatagarbha spoken of in the manner of emptiness? It has the characteristic of differentiation, the nature is empty of temporary adventitious defilements; it has the characteristic of non-differentiation, the nature is not empty of the supreme Dharma.' This aspect of non-differentiation is only found in the fully enlightened Buddha, as the scripture says: 'All immeasurable, infinite, inconceivable, and immaculate qualities, and the undifferentiated nature of liberation, this liberation is the Tathāgata.' In short, in the uncontaminated Dharmadhatu (zag med dbyings), through the four kinds of differences in meaning, the four names of Dharmakāya (chos kyi sku) and others can be distinguished. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
