Thus it is said. These four, as it is said in the scripture: 'Therefore, without attaining Buddhahood, one cannot attain Nirvana.' Because it is said in the scripture that only the fully enlightened Buddha possesses these qualities. In short, the key to recognizing the essence of the Tathagatagarbha is that it cannot be understood merely from the aspect of self-nature purity, but must be understood from the aspect of its inseparability from qualities such as power. As it is said in the scripture: 'Constantly unchanging, qualities without difference, this is the meaning of the ultimate truth, the essence of the Tathagatagarbha.' Second, explaining the reasons why sentient beings do not possess the Tathagatagarbha is divided into two parts: the main text and the explanation of the meaning of the sutra 'All sentient beings possess the Tathagatagarbha.' The first part is further divided into scriptural evidence and logical evidence. First is the scriptural evidence. As it is said in the scripture: 'Therefore, without attaining Buddhahood, one cannot attain Nirvana. Just as one cannot see the sun by abandoning light and rays.' This sutra also elucidates the same principle, because Nirvana and the other four are synonyms for the Tathagatagarbha. As it is said in the scripture: 'Why is this the Dharmakaya, this is the Tathagata, this is the truth of the noble ones, the ultimate Nirvana.' Second is the logical evidence. All sentient beings do not possess the true Tathagatagarbha, because they possess defilements. This is universally present, because the true Tathagatagarbha does not coexist with defilements. It does not coexist with defilements, because if the Tathagatagarbha, which is inseparable from qualities such as power, coexists with defilements, then these powers and other qualities would no longer be the nature of powers and other qualities. The second part is divided into questions and answers. First is the question: If it is said in the sutra: 'The Tathagatagarbha pervades all sentient beings.' What does it mean that many sutras say that all sentient beings possess the Buddha's Tathagatagarbha? The answer is divided into two parts: the directly stated intention and the implied meaning. First, the sutra that says that all sentient beings possess the Buddha's Tathagatagarbha indicates that there is a Tathagatagarbha Buddha in the mindstream of each sentient being, rather than merely possessing the inherent lineage of self-nature and the Dharma nature of self-nature purity. If explained in this way, the five necessary conditions for all sentient beings possessing the Tathagatagarbha as stated in the sutra cannot be achieved. The five necessary conditions are: 'Generating joy and manifestation, such as respect and wisdom, great compassion arises. For the sake of generating the five dharmas, there is no fault in it, thus contemplate.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Without attachment and possessing virtues, with equal love for oneself and all sentient beings, one quickly attains Buddhahood. Thus it is said. Secondly, one aspect of the Essence of the Buddha is named after it, and having it is said to have the Essence. For example, if one part of a cloth is burned, the whole cloth is said to be burned. There are three aspects to this: the reason for naming, the necessity of naming, and the harm to the entity. Firstly, the mind in the continuum of sentient beings, whose nature is clear light, is also called 'innate wisdom' (kun gzhi'i ye shes, Alaya-jnana), or 'the wisdom of non-duality at the base,' or 'the mind stream without outflows,' this Dharma, can be called by the name of the Essence of the Buddha, because it is one part of it. As it is said in the Ratnagotravibhāga: 'Because it occupies one part of it, it is referred to by the name of the second part.' Secondly, naming it by that name is necessary, because it is to avoid the five faults of not showing that all sentient beings have the Essence of the Buddha. The five necessities are, as it is said in the Uttaratantra: 'If it is said that all knowable things are empty in every way, why is it said here that the Victorious Ones have the Essence of the Buddha in sentient beings?' To abandon the five faults of faint-heartedness, despising sentient beings, not believing in the right view, slandering the right Dharma, and increasing attachment to self, thus it is said. Thirdly, there are two harms to the entity: those that come from the Uttaratantra, and those that come from the Trisamvaraprakarana. Firstly, as it is said: 'Therefore, like the sun and its rays, virtues are inseparable, there is no Nirvana except from the Buddha himself.' Its meaning is: sentient beings are not holders of the Essence of the Buddha, because they are not inseparable from the power of their own continuum and other virtues. Secondly, as it is said: 'The measure of harming the entity is: if there is such a Buddha-nature, then it is the same as the self of the Tirthikas, and it will become a real thing, and it is completely contradictory to the Sutras of definitive meaning.' Its meaning is: as long as one accepts something called 'Tathagatagarbha', one must also accept it as the supreme self and as truly existent, as it is said in the Uttaratantra itself: 'The play of self and non-self is pacified, it is the supreme self.' And: 'Because it is permanent and stable' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
