In the "Eighty Chapters of Manifestation," it is said: Just as all rivers flow into the great ocean, all vehicles of liberation are gathered in these great means of supreme realization. Thus it is known. Such Mantra Vehicle, in this land, due to the order of translation, is known as the New and Old schools, among which the Nyingma Secret Mantra surpasses the New School by six times. Among these, there are two streams of teachings: the scriptures and the treasures, here referring to the latter. The mind-blood of the all-knowing Padmakara, the master of the three times, the life-stone of the ocean of oath-bound protectors of the three roots, the mind-jewel of the realized vidyadharas, for all fortunate beings, it fulfills the temporary and ultimate needs as desired, without interruption. The lineage is pure, not mixed or adulterated, with the evidence of treasure texts, trustworthy and reliable in origin, the warmth of the dakini's oral transmission has not yet faded, and the blessings are swift. Such a profound collection of all the essential points from the treasures, this precious great treasury of treasures, the practice of ripening and liberating empowerment, adorned with the rituals of the vidyadhara lineage, is briefly presented in six appendices. The determination of the nature of the empowerment to be taught, the qualities of the teacher who teaches, the examination of the vessel of the listener, the actual explanation of the practice appendix on how to conduct the teaching and listening, the necessary recitations, and other related matters. First, the determination of the nature of the empowerment to be taught: The Tathagatagarbha, which is inherently present in the continuum of sentient beings, is the seed of the cause. This seed, relying on the power of the samadhi of the qualified Vajra Master, and the power of the symbolic relationship of outer, inner, and secret substances, etc., and skillful means, purifies the temporary defilements, so that the seed of enlightenment can mature, and this is to establish the cause of liberation in the continuum. For example, a stone containing gold ore is purified of impurities through smelting and other processes. Until it is refined into gold, although it inherently possesses the nature of gold, it cannot perform the function of gold. But when the wise person thoroughly removes the impurities through smelting, superior placer gold is produced, thereby performing the function of gold.

Removing that stain enables the manifestation of self-arisen wisdom. The word abhiṣiñca means to wash away or remove stains. Therefore, the function of empowerment is to remove or wash away the stains and habitual tendencies in the student's mindstream. The word abhiṣeka is said to establish qualification. Therefore, it establishes the qualification to practice the path or the ability to ripen the fruit in that mindstream, hence it is called empowerment. As it is said in the Two Examinations, "Pouring and anointing, therefore it is called empowerment." Thus, washing away the stains to be purified, and enabling the manifest realization of the wisdom of the result of purification, there are also, in the sequence of empowerment, the beneficial empowerment for the sake of taking care of those with faith, the empowerment of ability for the sake of taking care of those with diligence, and the profound empowerments for the sake of taking care of those with asceticism.
