Recitation is also empty talk; altruism without compassion is also empty talk; generosity without abandoning stinginess is also empty talk; a mantra practitioner who does not keep vows is also empty talk; a monk who does not keep precepts is also empty talk. A good person who does not meditate is also empty talk; knowledge without practicing the Dharma is also empty talk; Dharma practice that does not match the meaning of practice is also empty talk; preaching to others without acting according to one's own Dharma is also empty talk; instructions that one does not take into personal experience are also empty talk; in general, if a wise person does not subdue their mind with the Dharma, but instead the Dharma becomes an addition to afflictions, these! Hearing them as empty talk makes the ears weary, he said. Guru Padmasambhava said: There are ten kinds of big talk in practicing Dharma. Jomo asked what they were, and he replied: Knowing the Dharma without listening is big talk; having great power without practice is big talk; receiving blessings without devotion is big talk; becoming a Buddha without meditation is big talk; finding a teacher without respect is big talk; being liberated by Dharma without lineage is big talk; realization arising without instructions is big talk; one's own mindstream being liberated without practice is big talk; accomplishment without diligence is big talk; being auspicious without keeping vows is big talk; in general, wanting to achieve easily without enduring hardship, these will only be big talk, nothing else, he said. Guru Padmasambhava said: Practicing the Dharma must be without ten faults. Jomo asked what they were, and he replied: Even if you meditate, if it does not become an antidote to afflictions and thoughts, then there is the fault of the instructions not penetrating the mind; even if the mind is held, if wisdom does not liberate into impartiality, then there is the fault of not encountering special instructions; even if you have great devotion, if blessings do not enter, then there is the fault of not encountering an accomplished guru; even if you make great effort, if there is no progress in practice, then there is the fault of the energy of the mindstream not arising; if doing virtuous deeds makes the body uncomfortable, then there is the fault of the mind not being grounded; even if you do meditation, if the mind does not abide, then there is the fault of the power of samadhi not being reached; if knowledge increases, but experiences do not arise immediately, then there is the fault of falling into the one-sidedness of shamatha; if you do not awaken the power of awareness, then there is the fault of not knowing how to take appearances as companions; afflictions
