Because of clinging, it becomes the cause of wandering in samsara, so one should remember impermanence. That is, after one is born, one gradually approaches death and will surely die. One should keep in mind the death and separation of parents and relatives. For those who have died and will die, one should do what is beneficial to them. Furthermore, even now, many moments have passed and one is approaching death. All sentient beings, because they do not understand the truth of impermanence, expect permanence and do many things, but in the end they must abandon everything, fall into the lower realms and suffer. Therefore, after understanding these things, one should cultivate renunciation. In this way, when aversion to samsara arises and a definite understanding of impermanence arises in the mind, that is the measure of stability. Second, cultivate bodhicitta by contemplating temporary happiness and lasting happiness: Alas, the lower realms, hells, hungry ghosts, and animals have no happiness at all. The temporary happiness of gods and humans, which arises from giving and keeping precepts, is also impermanent and will eventually become a source of suffering. This is stated in all the sutras and tantras and will become apparent. No matter who it is, the happiness and joy they have experienced before will change. Other happiness is impermanent, youth is impermanent, power is impermanent, food, clothing, and wealth will all change, and one must have firm faith in this. One must obtain ultimate and lasting happiness from all of this. That is the ultimate secret of the Buddhas, cultivating shamatha and vipassana, and cultivating compassion for all deluded sentient beings. By contemplating in this way, one will develop aversion to suffering, and that is the standard for seeing conditioned phenomena as suffering. Third, cultivate bodhicitta by contemplating various causes and conditions: Now all sentient beings want happiness, but the causes of happiness are few, and the causes of suffering are many. The causes of death are many, and the causes of life are few. In short, in this samsara, for the actions that are done, the three doors of body, speech, and mind are not idle for even a moment, but are operating in various causes and conditions. However, if one does not encounter the correct path and does not practice it, then due to the causes and conditions of conceptual thought, these sentient beings will not have a time to be liberated from samsara. I myself was also deluded before,

Furthermore, by practicing "All sentient beings are pitiable," faith arises, and there is a need to renounce samsara. Compassion arises for the sentient beings of the six realms, and the thought arises, "Why not make offerings to the Three Jewels?" This is the measure of steadfastness. Fourth, contemplate that all actions are meaningless, and thereby train the mind of bodhicitta: Now, one's own body, speech, and mind are only for one's own happiness, only for perfect enjoyment, only to surpass others. Fearing that these will not be achieved, one engages in various non-virtuous actions without hesitation, such as trading, farming, laboring, and accumulating vast amounts of possessions. Although one does not know if one will die tomorrow, one toils in vain for the trivialities of life, such as food and clothing. In reality, there is no meaning to it. Although one accumulates vast wealth through sin and suffering, one must helplessly abandon all relatives and friends, and even the body itself, and fall alone into the lower realms. What is the point of doing this? One should think in this way with certainty. From this arises the need to enter the oral instructions of the lama, and the thought arises, "I must obtain the lama's teachings at all costs." This is the standard. Fifth, contemplate the qualities of the Buddha, and thereby train the mind of bodhicitta: The Buddha is free from all such suffering, has obtained all qualities, accomplishes all benefits for oneself and others, and has attained the bhumis, paths, and perfections. Such a Buddha, if not attained in this lifetime through this human body, will be extremely difficult to attain. Therefore, from now on, one should exert effort in seeking the means to attain unsurpassed bodhi. From this arises the need to be able to endure meditation, and the thought arises, "If I do not meditate, I will not be able to attain Buddhahood, so I must not abandon diligence." This is the measure of accomplishment. Sixth, contemplate the oral instructions of the lama, and thereby train the mind of bodhicitta: The obscurations of beginningless samsara can be purified by the passage of months and years, the qualities of the Buddha can be increased by the passage of months and years, and having encountered the oral instructions of the lama—the realization of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas—what else is there to do? One should exert effort in practice. From this arises the need not to engage in other activities. What is the use of worldly enjoyments? Meditate a little.
