There is no need for artificiality, because the lama directly introduces the original nature in a manifest way, and realization and liberation occur simultaneously, so it is easy to accomplish. Vastness means that there is no need to study the three pitakas, etc. By merely pointing out this key point, the intention of all sutras and tantras is understood, so it is vast. Meaning condensed means that there is no need to rely on many words and terms. With three pithy words of instruction, one's own mind is established as the dharmakaya, so it is meaning condensed. These possess three characteristics. In short, one needs a single instruction that is skillful in means, vast, profound in wisdom, and non-dual. An instruction that does not possess the characteristics, even if practiced, will not touch the essence of the mind, like feeding milk to a snake. An instruction that possesses the characteristics is like administering medicine to an illness. Therefore, here a profound and vast non-dual instruction is shown, namely the three: preliminary, main part, and conclusion. First, the preliminary practices are six: contemplating death and impermanence, thereby turning the mind away from samsara; taking refuge in the Three Jewels, thereby being liberated from the fear of samsara; generating bodhicitta, thereby transcending the inferior path; offering the mandala, thereby accumulating the accumulations of oneself and others; supplicating the lama, thereby blessings and siddhis arise; receiving profound empowerment, thereby surpassing the paramitas. Among these, first is contemplating death and impermanence: If one does not practice the sacred dharma this time, it seems one must wander in samsara forever. Samsara is like a chain of suffering, with no time for liberation. The suffering of the six realms is: the suffering of the gods falling, the fighting among the asuras, the birth, old age, sickness, and death of humans, the exploitation of animals, the hunger and thirst of pretas, the heat and cold of hells, etc., which are inconceivable. The method of liberation from this, if it is not dharma, is absolutely useless. Do not delay the affairs of the dharma. Right now, there is no certainty that one will not die. Those born before also die, those existing now also die, those just born now will also die. So think! There is no distinction of old or young in age, no distinction of good or bad in appearance. So think again! There is no certainty when one will die. The circumstances of death are inconceivable. There is no place to stay without dying, or rather, there is no place where one does not die.

It is not enough to die and pass away, there is no coming here; I do not remember the time of previous deaths; I have not prepared a place to stay or favorable conditions; So think! I cannot go on my own; And if you think you can endure that, then the suffering of the three lower realms is inconceivable; The only way to be liberated from those is through the Dharma, nothing else can help; Therefore, it is very important to cultivate with strong diligence, cutting off small thoughts right now; Alas! For such a cycle of existence, it is very important to treat the Dharma like a sick person longing for water, with a sense of renunciation like a prison; The second is to take refuge, for the prison of samsara, it is like being chased by enemies with swords and spears; There is no one who can save from that terror other than the Lama and the Three Jewels; Therefore, taking refuge is: Those Three Jewels are widely present and dwell in all beings; In the appearance of faith, visualize all the objects of refuge as dense as clouds in the sky in front of you; With a strong regret for the suffering of samsara and the deeds done in the past, join your palms and say this: Namo! To the Buddhas abiding in the ten directions and, the assembly of Lamas, Yidams, and Dakinis, all please consider me! From now on, I, without a protector, the Buddha, the chief of two-legged beings, and the peaceful, desire-free, noble Dharma, the supreme Sangha that does not turn back, I draw near and take refuge! The self-nature body of all Buddhas, I take refuge in the Lamas! The chief lord of all mandalas, I take refuge in the Yidam deity! The heroic heroes and heroines, the powerful lords, I take refuge in the assembly of Dakinis! I confess the sins I have committed in the past, before you, the protectors! Now I will follow and learn from you! I will not deviate from your commands! Please protect me with compassion from all directions! Say this three times; By this, it becomes the basis for the three vows; It protects from the fear of samsara; One will not go to the wrong path of non-Buddhists; Because it is the foundation or basis of the Dharma, it is done before all Dharma teachings; The third is generating Bodhicitta: Even if one realizes the meaning of profound wisdom, emptiness, if there is no skillful means, the mind of compassion, one will fall into the Hinayana Shravaka-Pratyekabuddha; Therefore, the unerring supreme path of the Mahayana is the heart of compassion, the union of skillful means and wisdom.
