Transformation may occur. The wind may be caught by a rope. The sun and moon may fall onto the plain. The ripening of karma will not deceive (us). Thus it is said. Therefore, good and bad karma generate various kinds of suffering and happiness in samsara. As it is said in the Hundred Deeds: "Deeds are also various, thus making beings various." Thus it is said. That is to say, wherever one is born in the high or low realms of samsara, it is the nature of suffering. Wherever one is born, it is a place of suffering. Whoever one associates with, they are friends of suffering. Whatever one enjoys, it is the enjoyment of suffering, with not even a slight opportunity for happiness. Hell beings have intense and prolonged suffering of heat and cold. As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: "What suffering is it when one person here is fiercely stabbed by three hundred short spears? That cannot even bear the slightest suffering of hell, let alone endure it." Thus it is said. Hungry ghosts have unbearable suffering of hunger and thirst. As it is said: "Some have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, but stomachs as large as a mountain, exhausted by hunger. They do not have the power to find even a little bit of discarded impurity." Thus it is said. Animals have stupidity and delusion, and unbearable suffering of being exploited. As it is said: "Other beings, without power, are driven by feet and hands, and stabbed and driven by iron and iron hooks. Some die for the sake of pearls, wool, bones, blood, meat, and skin." Thus it is said. These three are called the suffering of suffering. Even if one is born as a god or human in the happy realms, one cannot transcend suffering. The so-called suffering of change, even if one obtains the enjoyment of a human king like a universal monarch, in the end it will turn into suffering. As it is said: "Even having become a universal monarch, in samsara one will again become a slave." Thus it is said. Moreover, even if one obtains a body and enjoyment like the king of the gods, in the end one will die and fall. As it is said: "Indra, having been worthy of worship in the world, again fell to the earth due to the power of karma." Thus it is said. Moreover, even if a king of the gods like Brahma, having become detached from desire, obtains the happiness of meditative absorption, in the end he will also fall. As it is said: "Brahma himself, having become detached from desire and obtained happiness, will again fall into the fire of Avici hell."

Becoming trees, suffering never ceases, I pray! Thus it was said. Now, considering the suffering of humans, led by the four rivers of birth, old age, sickness, and death, there are countless sufferings. As it is said in the Sutra of Entering the Womb: Likewise, birth is also suffering, old age is also suffering, sickness is also suffering, death is also suffering, separation from loved ones is also suffering, encountering unpleasant things is also suffering, seeking what one desires but not finding it is also suffering, and it is also suffering to protect what one has. Thus it was said. Among these, the first, birth, is the root of all other births, and although four birthplaces are mentioned, most are born from the womb. Considering this, first, even at the time of entering the womb from the intermediate state, there is unimaginable suffering, and after entering the womb, there are countless sufferings from heat, cold, disease, and so on. Furthermore, there arises the perception of impurity, the perception of unpleasant smells, the perception of darkness, the perception of a prison, and the perception of emerging outward after being fully born. At the time of emerging from the womb, there is suffering like being skinned and rubbed against a wall. As it says in the Student's Letter: Extremely impure, foul-smelling, and congested, residing in a very narrow and dark place, having entered a womb-like hell, the body is also curled up and must dwell in great suffering. Thus it was said. The suffering of old age is also countless, but in short, there are ten. That is, the complete transformation of appearance, and likewise, hair, skin, color, ability, strength, splendor, merit, lack of wealth, complete transformation of mind, and the passing of the state and the shortening of life. As it says in the Noble Extensive Play Sutra: Old age makes a beautiful form ugly, old age steals splendor and diminishes strength, old age steals happiness and brings suffering, old age brings death, and old age also steals radiance. Thus it was said. The suffering of sickness is also countless, but in short, there are seven: the suffering of being struck by severe pain, undergoing harsh treatments, taking hot medicines, preventing desired food and drink, medicine.
