Being able to perform virtuous deeds, being able to cross the ocean of samsara, being able to walk the path of enlightenment, being able to attain the perfect Buddhahood. Shantideva said: Relying on the boat of human life, one can be liberated from the great river of suffering. Therefore, having obtained leisure and endowment, one must do something meaningful. As Shantideva himself said: This boat is difficult to find later, O ignorant one, do not sleep at this time. And: Having found such leisure, if I do not cultivate virtue, there is no greater deception than this, and there is no greater foolishness than this. The sutra says: In this time of obtaining extremely rare leisure and endowment, if one does not strive to accomplish permanent happiness, but is distracted by laziness and meaningless activities, how can such a person be said to have a heart? If one strives at this time, one will obtain permanent happiness, and if one does not strive, one will wander in the suffering ocean of samsara. In this time when one can choose permanent happiness and suffering, if one is still human, one should strive at this time. Thus it is said. Like this, although it is difficult to obtain and greatly beneficial, it is very easy to perish, because there is no one to nourish life, the causes of death are many, and time does not stop for even a moment. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: It is not reasonable to live comfortably thinking that one will not die today, when I am about to disappear, I will surely be devoured by demons. In general, all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, the Buddha himself said: Monks, all conditioned phenomena are impermanent. How are they impermanent? In the Compendium of Special Expositions it says: All accumulations will eventually be exhausted, all that is raised will eventually fall, all meetings will eventually be separated, and all that lives will eventually die. Thus it is said. The outer world of the vessel is also impermanent, with various formations, durations, destructions, and emptiness, the climate changes into four seasons, and the situation does not remain the same, the rising and setting of the sun and moon are not constant even for a moment. The sentient beings inside are also impermanent, as it is said in the Holy Great Play Sutra: The three realms are impermanent like autumn clouds, and the birth and death of beings are like watching a dance. Thus it is said. That is to say, one will not stay in this world for a long time, one must die no matter when, and there is nothing that becomes a cause of immortality, even if food and other causes of immortality are obstructed, one will die.

Material possessions and utensils, etc., are conducive to sustaining one's own life, but in the pursuit of acquiring them, there are countless deaths. Life does not stay, like the flow of a river or the burning of incense. The Bodhicharyavatara says, "Day and night do not stay, this life is constantly diminishing, and there is no addition from elsewhere, so how can we not die?" This means that death can come at any time. At the time of death, relatives, wealth, and the body, etc., which are cherished, cannot accompany us, and we must quickly separate. The Bodhicharyavatara says, "Since one must die abandoning everything, I did not know this truth." etc. Therefore, death is certain, but when it will occur is uncertain. When faced with death, there is no way to escape it. Old people cannot avoid death, there is no such thing as being too young, and adults cannot stop death. Whether the body is strong or weak, one cannot transcend the bounds of death. The teacher Hero said, "Even the bodies of the Buddhas, adorned with marks and signs, the vajra body, is impermanent, what need is there to mention the bodies of sentient beings, which are as fragile as banana trees?" Accumulated wealth cannot stop death either. Again, it says in the same text, "Having obtained much wealth, and enjoyed happiness for a long time, one goes away naked and empty-handed, just as if robbed by thieves." Therefore, one's own body cannot stop death either. The Bodhicharyavatara says, "The body that has been painstakingly accumulated, nourished with food and drink, will eventually separate from oneself, be eaten by wild dogs, or be burned by a blazing fire, or rot in water, or be buried in the ground." Therefore, it is uncertain when death will come. The Sutra says, "The next life and tomorrow, which will come first, cannot be known in advance, do not be busy with tomorrow, one should be diligent in the next life." Now the body is strong, the face is radiant, one feels happiness, but one never takes death to heart. If today one is struck by the Lord of Death, the body loses strength and one cannot even sit up, the face loses its radiance and becomes dull, one feels pain and cannot endure the illness, cannot endure the pain, medicine and treatment are ineffective, rituals and offerings are of no help, death...
