The common preliminary practice, a branch of the Great Perfection, the Very Profound All-Unifying Treasure Trove. The Essence of the Rainbow Body. The common preliminary practice, a branch of the Great Perfection, the Very Profound All-Unifying Treasure Trove. The Essence of the Rainbow Body. Oṃ āḥ hūṃ! Thus abides the practice called the common preliminary practice, a branch of the Great Perfection, the Very Profound All-Unifying Treasure Trove. The combination of the four preliminary practices is to contemplate the difficulty of obtaining leisure and fortune, impermanence of death, the law of karma, and the suffering of samsara. Among these, first of all, this precious human body of leisure and fortune is extremely difficult to obtain. As stated by Shantideva: "This leisure is indeed difficult to obtain; having obtained it, one can accomplish benefit. If one does not accomplish benefit with this, how can one obtain it again later?" Thus he said. Furthermore, the eight leisures are: From the Compendium: "Having abandoned the eight unfree states, one always obtains leisure." Thus he said. From the Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness: "The hells, the pretas, animals, barbarians, long-lived gods, wrong views, and those without a Buddha, and the mute—these are the eight unfree states." Thus he said. How are these unfree? The hells are constantly of the nature of suffering; the pretas are of the nature of mental torment; animals are always greatly deluded; and all three of these are without shame or embarrassment, and because of shamelessness, their minds are unruly, so there is no opportunity to practice the Dharma. The so-called long-lived gods are attached to the pleasure of their abode and do not strive for virtue, so they are unfree. Thus it is taught that the six realms of existence have no leisure. Even if one is a human, a barbarian is one who is difficult to meet with a noble being. A person with wrong views does not see virtue as the cause of higher realms and liberation. To be born in a world without a Buddha is because there is no one to show what should be done and what should not be done. A mute person cannot understand for himself the Dharma of what is well-spoken and what is poorly spoken. Thus, being separated from these eight is called perfect leisure. Fortune is five of one's own fortunes and five of others' fortunes, totaling ten. Among these, the five fortunes of oneself are as it is said: "Being born as a human in the central lands,

Earth, completeness, non-reversal of karma, faith in the place, these are (the five personal perfections). Among them, human existence refers to: having equal opportunities with people, possessing the faculties of male and female. Being born in the central land refers to: being born in a place where one can rely on noble individuals. Completeness refers to: not being foolish or mute, having the opportunity to practice virtuous Dharma. Faith in the place refers to: having faith in the noble Dharma spoken by the teacher, becoming the place of all pure Vinaya teachings. Non-reversal of karma refers to: not having committed the five heinous crimes in this life. The five other perfections refer to: the Buddha's coming into the world, the teaching of the noble Dharma, the Dharma that has been taught abiding, being able to follow the Dharma that abides, and having compassion to think of others. Like this, possessing these ten of oneself and others is called possessing perfect endowments. Like this, having both leisure and endowment is a precious human body. Why is it called precious? Because it is similar to a wish-fulfilling jewel, it is difficult to obtain, therefore it is called precious; it is of great benefit, therefore it is called precious. Among them, difficult to obtain refers to: In the Bodhisattva Treasury it is said: Non-changing is difficult, obtaining human life is also difficult, obtaining the noble Dharma is difficult, the appearance of a Buddha is also difficult. For example, how is it difficult to obtain? In the Bodhicaryāvatāra it is said: Therefore, the Bhagavan said: Just as a turtle's neck entering the hole of a yoke floating in the great ocean, it is very difficult to obtain human existence. Just like this. As for the individual: it is difficult for those born in the three lower realms to obtain. Great benefit refers to: Master Chandragomin said: Whoever obtains it can dry up the ocean of samsara, and can sow the seeds of virtue for supreme enlightenment, the qualities of which are even more superior than a wish-fulfilling jewel, who would make such a human existence meaningless? Relying on the path of the Sugatas, preparing to guide beings, the path that is obtained by humans with great mental strength, such a path cannot be obtained by gods and nagas, asuras and, garudas, flesh-eaters, kinnaras and those who crawl on their bellies. Thus it is said, therefore, the human body with leisure and endowment can abandon non-virtue.
