The common and uncommon preliminaries. The first has three parts: subduing the mind with renunciation, taking refuge as the foundation of the common vehicle, and the guidance on generating bodhicitta as the root of the Great Vehicle. The first part is: If it is a new guidance, then the difficulty of finding leisure and endowment, the impermanence of life, the ripening of karmic results, and the faults of samsara should be explained in detail one by one, until the corresponding experience arises in the mind, and one should engage in shamatha and vipassana meditation. Here, assuming that one is already proficient in these practices, and only as a way of slightly reminding, these objects are summarized into one, that is: repeatedly think that the human body is difficult to obtain and has great meaning when obtained, and now that you have obtained such a perfect human body, you must practice the supreme Dharma that can obtain permanent happiness. Moreover, this life is like a flash of lightning in the sky, and it is impossible to determine when death will occur, so do not delay, but start practicing the Dharma now. At the time of death, food, wealth, enjoyment, enemies, friends, residence, body, power, etc. cannot follow, and there is no benefit or harm. No matter what happens, victory or defeat, suffering or happiness, there is no need to worry about it. The two karmas of good and evil follow like a shadow, and even after death they will follow. It is impossible to abandon the evil deeds that have already been committed, and it is impossible to take away the good deeds that have not been personally practiced. Due to the power of karma, no matter where one is born in samsara, high or low, one cannot escape the wheel of suffering, and there is no happiness to speak of. If one is born in the three lower realms, what should one do? There is no certainty that one will not be born there. From now on, even if one's life is in danger, one will not do evil, and one should diligently practice virtue. If one is born in a happy realm with contaminated virtue, even if there is temporary happiness, it is like a good dream in a sleepy state, which will eventually change and disappear. All the victories and defeats, sufferings and happiness in samsara are like a wheel, and nothing is permanent. Therefore, no matter how good the happiness of samsara is, it has no meaning. Therefore, one should repeatedly think from the bottom of one's heart that everything one does other than the supreme Dharma is meaningless and will only lead to the cycle of suffering, and put it into practice, which is the most important thing. Second, taking refuge as the foundation of the common vehicle.

Think like this: From the terrifying suffering of samsara, like a pit of fire, to liberate all sentient beings, I will pray to the infallible refuge, the precious Three Jewels. After thinking like this, this place where I naturally abide, becomes a ground of jewels, vast and wide and level. In the center, a wish-fulfilling tree, its branches laden with flowers and fruits. The branches of that tree extend to the center and the four directions. On the central branch, there is a high and wide throne, the root guru. Above that, the lineage gurus in the form of stacked tiers, abiding as the embodiment of the totality of the Three Jewels. From the branches extending to the four directions: In front, the special Buddhas, yidams, victorious ones, the mandala deities. To the right, the common Buddhas, the teacher Shakyamuni Buddha, etc., the Buddhas of the ten directions and three times, the supreme emanations. Behind, the Dharma Jewel, in the form of stacked scriptures. To the left, the common Sangha, bodhisattvas and shravakas and pratyekabuddhas, the noble ones. Around all of these, the special Sangha, dakinis, dharma protectors, wisdom beings, abiding like dense clouds. After visualizing like this, together with oneself, all sentient beings equal to space gather, happiness and suffering, good and bad, you yourselves know, hoping and relying like this, with intense devotion and a heartfelt cry, take refuge. Recite: Namo! To the Sugatas, the victorious Buddhas and their bodhisattva retinues of the ten directions and three times, I and all sentient beings equal to space, from now until enlightenment is attained, with body, speech, and mind, respectfully and always take refuge. Recite as much as possible. At the end of the session, rays of light emanate from the bodies of the refuge objects, touching oneself and all other sentient beings, purifying sins and obscurations. All sentient beings go to pure lands. The refuge objects dissolve into light and are absorbed into oneself, then dedicate the merit. When sleeping, visualize the refuge objects not being withdrawn, and sleep with your head facing them. Fall asleep in a state of devotion and attachment. Third, the root of the Great Vehicle, the instruction on generating bodhicitta: No matter from which direction you measure, the realms of the world are endless. All of these are pervaded by sentient beings of the six realms without any gaps. All of these sentient beings have been one's parents countless times.
