With the aspiration, thus accomplishing perfect enlightenment, the mind of enlightenment arises. Such a mind of enlightenment, it is said, has three supports: relying on the Buddha, relying on the Dharma, and relying on the Sangha. First, relying on the Buddha, it is said that the Bhagavan, the Great Sage, a potter's son named 'Boy Light-Maker', offered shoes and balls of five kinds of earth, as well as umbrella handles and so forth, and prayed: 'How is the body of the Tathagata, how are the retinue, the measure of life, and the pure land, how are the excellent and auspicious marks? May I also become exactly like that.' With this prayer, he later manifested complete enlightenment, and it is said that this is the Bhagavan, the Lord of the Teaching. Therefore, this is relying on the Buddha. Now, relying on the Sangha, it is said that when the great layperson Licchavi Vimala was ill, the venerable Manjushri and others all went to inquire about his health. At that time, a rain of flowers beyond comprehension fell, and those flowers did not stick to the bodies of the Bodhisattvas even when they did not brush them off, but they stuck to the Shravakas even when they brushed them off. To this, the house-guardian goddesses said: 'The reason why you Shravakas, even when you brush off the flowers, they still stick to your bodies, is because you fear desire, and that is why it happens like that. The reason why the Bodhisattvas do not brush them off and they do not stick is because they do not fear desire, and that is why it happens like that.' Hearing these words, (the Shravakas) said: 'Then you also do not have them sticking to you, are you also Bodhisattvas?' (The house-guardian goddesses) said: 'The object of our reliance is such a person, relying on such a person, how could it not be a Bodhisattva?' It is said that they said this. This is relying on the Sangha. After that, relying on the Dharma, it is said that there are three types: a Bodhisattva like a shepherd, a Bodhisattva like a king, and a Bodhisattva like a listener. The first is, all sentient beings attain perfect enlightenment first, and oneself attains enlightenment last, this is said for them. So, what is it like, for example?

It is the intention or aspiration of the venerable Avalokiteśvara, like the venerable Avalokiteśvara who made the aspiration, 'Until all sentient beings have attained perfect enlightenment before me, may I not become enlightened.' Like that, this is the shepherd-like bodhicitta. The second is, having become enlightened in perfect enlightenment before all sentient beings, wishing that all sentient beings would become enlightened later, this is what is said about that situation, this is the king-like bodhicitta. Then there is the ferryman-like bodhicitta, which refers to the wish that oneself and others would all simultaneously attain perfect enlightenment. The order that we ourselves practice regularly now refers to this situation. Therefore, for the lama who generates this bodhicitta, generate the recognition that he is a truly perfect and complete Buddha, offer with all the clouds of offerings, body and possessions, as well as the power of kingship, offer all lands and territories, and then pray. Please hold a flower in your hand and then repeat. Teacher, please listen. Just as the Tathāgatas, Arhats, truly perfect and complete Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of the past, and the Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas who dwell on the great earth, how they generated the precious bodhicitta, so too, please teacher, generate for me the unsurpassed truly perfect and complete bodhicitta. After reciting this three times, the teacher says, 'It is skillful means,' and the disciples say, 'Excellent.' Then let each person scatter a flower, and all the scattered flowers, visualize them falling on the head of the virtuous lama, turning into large flower umbrellas. One also scatters flowers upwards from the top of one's head, like this. It is said in the *Ratnakuta Sutra*: 'With whatever flower you scatter to me, may it become an umbrella in all ten directions, the source of happiness at all times and places, may it cover the head of the two-legged lord.' That is what is said. Now it is necessary to recite many more times, please recite thirty-seven times. In order to generate such a bodhicitta, the causes are countless.
