Those who constantly speculate on things that others consider to be permanent, such as 'I' (Tibetan: བདག་, Sanskrit Devanagari: ātmā, Sanskrit Romanization: atma, Chinese literal meaning: self), 'Lord', 'Sound-born' (Sanskrit: śabda-brahman), 'Purusha' (Sanskrit: puruṣa), and great sages, things with the color of the sun, etc., if there is an entity that possesses these, then all internal and external investigations, including compounded phenomena that lack inherent existence, etc., would be refuted by the reasoning of this treatise. Therefore, if you also demonstrate the non-duality of selflessness in this way, and if it is logical and reasonable, then we will admit defeat. Why do you make so many arguments? Because we accept how all of samsara and nirvana appear in conventional truth. The non-existence of all phenomena of samsara and nirvana, the unnegated dharmadhatu (Sanskrit: dharmadhātu), should not have distinctions of place, time, or nature, because the many distinctions seen in all subjects of phenomena do not become distinctions of the nature of phenomena, just as the distinctions of containers do not become distinctions of space. If it is argued that since Madhyamikas have nothing, there is nothing to say in response to or refute the views of others, then why is it that the Madhyamika's reasoning and logic refute and negate the self-nature of the proponents of inherent existence? Whatever is not established by reasoning should not be accepted. Alternatively, one could say: why does the reasoning not establish one's own position, which is refuted by argument? If people say that it is easy to find reasoning and logic to refute others, and easy to find signs and reasoning to establish one's own desired position, then why can't faults be pointed out in the Madhyamika's position? It is because they do not understand the two, establishment and refutation. Mere words without reasoning cannot establish or refute, which can be compared to the proponents of inherent existence saying 'it exists' and the Madhyamikas saying 'it does not exist'. If one says that because 'non-existence' should not be called 'existence', the name 'existence' should be used to establish 'existence', then why say 'it exists' and 'it possesses'? The Madhyamikas will say 'it does not exist'. If there is no connection between sound and meaning, so meaning does not follow name, but if you believe that all phenomena that appear to worldly people are existent, then you do not deny conventional appearances, but if you use that to establish existence in ultimate truth, then why would the wisdom that recognizes the existence of things themselves become a reason for worldly people? It would become a yogi who sees the suchness, and thus samsara would become completely non-existent. If one says that because all things are negated as non-existent, one will fall into the extreme of nihilism, then if negating 'existence' becomes 'non-existence', then all the Madhyamika's views should not be non-existent, because what the Madhyamika negates is permanent existence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because there is no entity, the non-entity that prevents it is impossible in meaning. Its pervasiveness is 'without entity,' just as the non-entity of a rabbit's horn prevents its non-entity from existing in meaning. If emptiness is established through reasoning or logic, then everything will not become empty, because reasoning and signs are entities. If the commitment is different from the reason, then like sound being an object of the eye, it is not a property of the side; if it is not different, then it is not a reason like the commitment, because there is no reason, everything is without inherent existence. Although it is explained in this way, it is self-contradictory, and it would be better to say that non-inherent existence proves non-inherent existence. Just as an emanation creates an emanation, and a magician creates an illusion, how is refutation done? This refutation is also the same. Because there is an example of emptiness, everything will not become empty, because if the example is also a non-entity, it cannot symbolize emptiness. An example unrelated to the sign is not a proof, just as the example of a black crow cannot symbolize itself as black. The teacher Chandrakirti explains it in that way. Others explain it differently, not relying on examples, because if the example is not other than emptiness, there is no difference, so it is not a symbolizer; if it is other, it cannot symbolize, because its qualities do not exist in others, just as a crow cannot symbolize itself as black. If all differentiations (rnam par byed pa) show selflessness, then what is the need? If phenomena inherently exist as entities, then what benefit is there in showing and seeing emptiness? It would become a fault of slander. Because the reality of phenomena is inherently emptiness, showing and realizing it has the merit of producing all higher realms and liberation, so that is the need to show it. Furthermore, from beginningless time, the appearances of clinging to things as real and the conceptions arising from bad inner and outer tenets are what bind one to samsara, so that is what needs to be refuted here, not the mere appearance of dependent origination of samsara and nirvana. As the Two Truths says: 'Preventing what is examined by others.' And as the Entering the Middle Way says: 'Even the subtlest reality, its essence is not seen. Therefore, I say non-inherent existence, not to eliminate appearances.' And as the Garland of Jewels says: 'I do not prevent entities that have the nature of appearance.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
