The first bhumi, the Extremely Joyful, is attained through the ten dharmas. Why is the first bhumi called the Extremely Joyful? As it says: "Being close to enlightenment, and seeing the accomplishment of the benefit of sentient beings, great joy arises, therefore it is called the Extremely Joyful." Like that, because of realizing the suchness that has never occurred before, it is called the Extremely Joyful. Why are ten dharmas needed to attain the first bhumi? Because all the faults of the first bhumi must be abandoned, and all qualities must be fully generated. How is the distinction of the purifying dharma obtained? The distinction of what is to be completely purified is only through the distinction of complete purification by the characteristic of not focusing on the nature of ultimate truth. The second bhumi has two aspects. First: In the second bhumi, the perfection of discipline is completely fulfilled, and by the power of completely purifying discipline, the special purity of discipline is obtained. As the sutra says: "What is complete purity of discipline? Not thinking of the mind of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer..." and "Without other affairs, seeking the perfections; this is diligently seeking the perfections." Second is the explanation: By completely purifying the discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas, accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings, and completely preventing unfavorable factors, thereby abandoning the intention of Hearers and Solitary Realizers; remembering even the small benefits done by others, not letting them be washed away by water; not doing unfavorable retaliation for the harm done by others, and so forth; having no regrets for practicing the dharma such as maturing sentient beings; being willing to go to hell for a long time for the sake of one sentient being, and in this way being loving to all beings; without arrogance, paying homage to all virtuous people such as Khenpos and Acharyas; practicing the meaning taught by virtuous friends in a way that makes diligence the essence; without other affairs, giving and so forth, the six perfections, called joy, are called the second bhumi in eight ways of purification. Why is it called the Immaculate Bhumi? Because it is free from the stain of striving for immoral conduct, it is called the Immaculate Bhumi. As it is said, because the perfection of discipline is fulfilled, it is free from immoral

Because it is not stained by defilements. If asked, how is complete purification achieved? The answer is: As previously stated in the first bhumi, it is through the distinction of being completely purified by being grasped by non-objective wisdom. The third bhumi has two aspects. The first is the root: Not being satisfied with listening, etc. A Bodhisattva abiding in the third bhumi should abide in five dharmas. What are the five? Not being satisfied with much learning, and also not being attached to letters, etc. The second is the explanation: Wanting to uphold the sacred Dharma spoken by all the Buddhas, not knowing satisfaction from listening to the sacred Dharma; not looking at gain and respect, etc., but teaching the sacred Dharma thoroughly with a mind of loving-kindness; dedicating all the dharmas that purify the field to that, thereby purifying one's own Buddha-field, that is, the container world and the faults of sentient beings who depend on it; seeing the faults of samsara, such as sentient beings whom one has helped harming in return for kindness, never being weary of benefiting others; not engaging in the thought of hearers and self-realizers, etc., this is being ashamed with regard to oneself; with regard to others, not doing such unwholesome dharmas, this is being conscientious. With these five purifications, it is called the third bhumi. Why is it called the Illuminating Bhumi? As it is said: Because it makes great light, it is called Illuminating. Because of the power of samadhi, it makes the light of Dharma for oneself and others. If asked, how is complete purification achieved? The answer is: As before. The fourth bhumi has two aspects. The root is: Being separated from the thought of hearers and self-realizers, dwelling in the forest; with the combination of things, not even desiring the enlightenment to be attained, this is having few desires; even if special things are obtained, not pursuing them, this is being content; not abandoning the patience of realizing certainty in the profound Dharma, etc., perfecting the qualities of practice; not intentionally engaging with all dharmas, being liberated from wrong views, etc., these are all explained by the Great Commentary according to the Sutra. In the commentary, it is explained according to the literal meaning of the treatise. The Sutra is: The Great Bodhisattva abiding in the fourth bhumi, Dharma
