Because the root of affliction is conceptual thought. Therefore, the four types of subject-object conceptual thoughts are the distinguishing characteristic only of the Bodhisattva's path of application among the two paths of application, the Bodhisattva's and the Hearer-Solitary Realizer's, because the Bodhisattva's path of application has the function of affliction, while the other (the Hearer-Solitary Realizer's path of application), even if it exists, does not have this function. Specifically, the paths of application of Hearers and Solitary Realizers are those that manifest attachment to the four truths in sixteen aspects, such as ignorance. Therefore, those that focus on suffering and origin are afflictive object-grasped conceptual thoughts; those that focus on cessation and path are purified object-grasped conceptual thoughts, and all are manifested as attachment to the selflessness of persons, which is the aspect of refuting the conceptual thought of substance-grasping. Therefore, although they have the nature of subject-object conceptual thoughts, they do not have the function of affliction, because manifesting attachment to impermanence and other dharmas is not an obstacle to one's own enlightenment. Therefore, the teacher said, 'Even if they are mixed, they are established as arising unmixed.' If it is said that the paths of application of Hearers and Solitary Realizers are also said to be abandoned by cultivation, then the answer is that it is abandoned from the aspect related to the afflictive obscuration, but not from the aspect related to conceptual thought, so there is no fault. Therefore, the way in which conceptual thought becomes a special characteristic is that the teacher's intention is not reversed, just as it was said before. Some people think that the aspect of refuting conceptual thought, and some say that the four applications are more superior to the paths of application of Hearers and Solitary Realizers in terms of clinging to selflessness, which is repeated with the special characteristics of the aspect. There are also some people who think that having the aspect of proof is more superior in terms of being related to what is to be abandoned, which is also unreasonable, because these conceptual thoughts are said to be abandoned by the path of seeing and the path of cultivation, and it is impossible for the path of application to have what is to be abandoned. If the path of application also has what is to be abandoned, then what is to be abandoned is not necessarily one of the two, the path of seeing and the path of cultivation. Second, the classification: The fundamental classification is the four types of subject-grasped and object-grasped conceptual thoughts that are to be abandoned by the path of seeing and the path of cultivation, which are eight in total. Each of these is further divided into large, medium,

According to the classification, there are ninety-nine types. Moreover, according to the distinctions of the three realms, they become one hundred and eight types. Third, the determination of number: The object to be examined is determined to be the grasper and the grasped. The grasped is further divided into the all-afflictive and the pure-all. The grasper is further divided into substance and imputation, because it is also definite for things, so the conceptualization of its object is also determined to be four types. Fourth, the determination of order: The four aspects of the decisive part are the order of meaning. They are the basis of the distinctions of the four conceptualizations here. Therefore, by the power of the basis of distinction, the order of distinction is established. Fifth, the way to abandon by antidote: The gross manifest ones are abandoned below the eighth ground. The subtle latent ones are abandoned by the wisdom of the tenth ground. Second, regarding the meaning of the limbs, there are three: the summary, the detailed explanation, and the way of possessing on the path of joining. The first of these has two: the general connection and the explanation of individual meanings. The first of these is: also possessing the four conceptualizations. The second is divided into two. The first is the summary of the grasped conceptualization, divided into root and commentary. The first of these is: the basis of division of the grasped conceptualization. The number of divisions is two. The basis of division is relying only on things, and its antidote, the completely pure, etc. The grasped conceptualization relying on only things and purity, each has ninety-nine types. In order, due to the distinctions of the ninety-nine objects such as ignorance and aggregates. The second is the commentary: The grasped conceptualization, the subject, if divided, has two types, namely, the basis of the all-afflictive, that is, clinging to the appearance of the object, and the basis of the antidote, that is, clinging to the appearance of the object itself. Each of these also has ninety-nine types, in order, due to the classification of the ninety-nine objects such as ignorance and the pure aggregates. Second, the summary of the grasper conceptualization, divided into root and commentary. The first of these is: the basis of division of the grasper conceptualization. The number of divisions is considered to be two. The nature of the divided is relying on the real person, and the basis of the imputed person. These two are also like the grasped conceptualization, due to the classification of the object, there are ninety-nine types, in order, due to the independent self, etc.
