As for what is to be abandoned on the path, it is only these four types of grasping and appearance-making conceptualizations. If these conceptualizations are the nature of the four preparatory paths, then bodhisattvas, in order to abandon the obscurations of affliction and knowledge over three countless eons, would be exerting themselves to abandon only their own preparatory paths. Moreover, since beginners have not generated the preparatory path, it would follow that they should not have grasping and appearance-making conceptualizations. If there are other grasping and appearance-making conceptualizations besides these, then, since they are not explained in this text, it would mean that what is to be abandoned is not completely explained. In that case, it would also be impossible to understand which opposing factors the various paths are the antidotes to. Furthermore, these conceptualizations are of a negating nature. If the entering and returning in the fifth topic, as well as the conceptualizations of grasping, etc., also become of a negating nature, that would be unreasonable. For in the commentary, it says, "One should enter" and "One should return," and it explains that "conceptualizing grasping" is of a truly establishing nature. Moreover, the sutra also shows the conceptualizations of grasping and appearance-making through the door of returning, which truly shows the wisdom of emptiness as an antidote. If it is said that the conceptualizations of the fifth topic are not included in the conceptualizations of this context, that is also unreasonable. For in the Great Commentary, it says, "In that case, the number of the four conceptualizations to be abandoned by the path of seeing and the path of meditation, which are included in the peak realization explained below, is like the part that definitely distinguishes them, and all of this should be said to rely on all afflictions." Because these conceptualizations of specific characteristics are said to be abandoned by the peak path of seeing. Furthermore, in the Great Commentary, it also says, "The four conceptualizations are not obstacles to one's own enlightenment, therefore, even if they are mixed with it, they are born without being mixed." How should this statement be interpreted? If these conceptualizations of grasping and appearance-making are the nature of the bodhisattva's preparatory path, then it cannot be established that they are born mixed with the preparatory path of hearers and solitary realizers, because the intention of the noble ones is to show the nature of the four conceptualizations of grasping and appearance-making according to the order of the preparatory path, and not grasping and appearance-making.

Therefore, it is unreasonable to show these paths of application (sbyor lam) as being in the nature of conceptualizations (rnam par rtog pa). Therefore, although this system is widely known, it is unreasonable because it cannot withstand scrutiny. Furthermore, others, seeing that the form of valid negation as described above and the essence of the path are incompatible, assert that these four conceptualizations are solely to be abandoned, and they explain them as being in the nature of affirmation. This is also not good, because all clinging with the nature of negation and affirmation is to be abandoned by bodhisattvas, and all of that is included in the four conceptualizations of grasper and grasped. Furthermore, it contradicts the fact that the noble ones and masters have said that the four applications of ascertainment (nges 'byed cha mthun bzhi po) are, in number, the essence of the four conceptualizations of grasper and grasped, and that they are defiled by them. If the four paths of application do not possess the essence of the four conceptualizations of grasper and grasped, then how can those paths be defiled by conceptualizations? If you say it is because they possess what is to be abandoned, that is also very unreasonable, because the paths of seeing and meditation would also be subject to that. If you say it is because of the connection of latent predispositions (bag la nyal rjes su 'brel bas), that consequence is unavoidable, because the latent predispositions of these are to be abandoned by the wisdom of the tenth ground. Furthermore, if the four paths of application are not the essence of the four conceptualizations of grasper and grasped, then either the number of conceptualizations to be abandoned is not fixed at four, or the paths of application are not the essence of conceptualization. Both of these are unreasonable. Because each of the four conceptualizations of grasper and grasped has three divisions—small, medium, and large—making nine each, and these are divided into one hundred and eight conceptualizations according to the distinctions of the three realms, all of which must be abandoned without exception. As it is said, 'When these epidemic diseases are exhausted, like one who has been breathless for a long time, the breath is released.' In order to obtain all the teachings of the Buddha, and because the paths of application are not conceptualizations, the faults have already been pointed out. Therefore, focusing on the objects of grasper and grasped, any clinging, whether negative or affirmative, is a conceptualization of grasper and grasped. The four applications of ascertainment are also, in order, the grasper on the side of defilement and purification, and the existence of what is to be negated and what is produced.
