Therefore, it is uncertain to doubt whether it exists or not. The reason is as follows: This dharma, because "I" is not seen in some individuals, it cannot be determined that "I" does not exist in any individual. Even if the manifestation of selflessness is not seen to be universally present in all things, it is possible that things of the nature of selflessness exist in some things. For example, having seen that a hard diamond cannot be cut by a sword, one cannot prove that wood, etc., cannot be cut by a sword with the characteristic of being as hard as a diamond. Furthermore, this dharma, from where can the doubt be avoided that there is doubt about the existence of its opposite (i.e., selflessness)? It cannot be avoided, because no valid means has seen that its establishment contradicts existence. The reason is: If it is the case that because "I" pervades life, etc., thereby seeing life, etc., as contradicting selflessness, then, this dharma, on some bases it must be related to the result of "I", and on other bases it must be related to the nature of "I", what else is there besides that? It must be one of them. Therefore, to conclude, there is doubt that life, etc., not only contradicts "I", but also contradicts selflessness. Furthermore, even if life, etc., contradicts selflessness, and it is allowed that selflessness contradicts when life, etc., exists, then, rationalist, according to your view, the living body cannot be established as having a self because of the reason of selflessness. What is the reason? Because you do not think that a dharma that has not contradicted is necessarily real, that is, existing. For example, although life, etc., has not contradicted the similar class (i.e., "I"), you think that it does not exist in "I". If it is thought that the reason, life, etc., has not contradicted the similar class (i.e., "I"), then therefore it must also be thought that it has concomitance with the similar class. If it is not so, because there is no contradiction with the similar class, there is no concomitance, then even if selflessness exists, it cannot be established as having a self, because you do not think that the negation of negation can establish affirmation. Furthermore, it is shown that dependence on cause and effect is established, and that "I" contradicts life. As the smoke which is the nature of "I", if there is no benefit, then it is established as something that does not arise, because if fire is beneficial, it will appear, that is, arise. Therefore, this smoke, you appear.
