Since it has been proclaimed that all dharmas are without inherent existence, there is no harm to those who speak of mind-only. As it is said in the noble *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: 'O noble one who is truly ultimate, I, considering the three kinds of absence of inherent existence of all dharmas, namely, the absence of inherent existence of characteristics, the absence of inherent existence of arising, and the absence of inherent existence of ultimate reality, have taught that all dharmas are without inherent existence.' And so on, it is extensively explained. Therefore, the sutras that teach the absence of inherent existence are not literal. Like this, if one completely conceptualizes the meaning literally, one will be seized by the serpent of fierce wrong views. As it is said, in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: 'If for those sentient beings, those sentient beings who are not perfectly accomplished in the great accumulation of merit and wisdom, and are not upright and of an upright nature, and are not able to distinguish and eliminate, and abide in holding their own views as supreme, those sentient beings, having heard that dharma, do not understand the profound truth that I have spoken with consideration, as it is, even if they have faith in that dharma, (they will think) all these dharmas are only without inherent existence, all these dharmas are only unborn, only unceasing, only peaceful from the beginning, and their nature is only completely pacified. 'Like this, they will manifestly cling to the literal meaning of the dharma, and those beings, by that basis, will obtain the view of regarding all dharmas as non-existent and as without characteristics, and having obtained the view of non-existence and the view of without characteristics, they will also impute all kinds of accusations to all things.' And so on, it is said. If those things that the Tathagata has spoken with consideration are not to be clung to literally, then how should they be understood? Therefore, one should fully grasp the intention of the Sage through intention and hidden intention. There are four kinds of intention: intention for another time, intention for another meaning, intention for equality, and intention for the intention of the individual. There are also four kinds of hidden intention: hidden intention for introduction, hidden intention for characteristics, hidden intention for antidote, and hidden intention for transformation.

This is all there is to it, so one should seek the intention through any of these means. In reality, it is not by clinging to the literal meaning. Or, one should follow the sutras of definitive meaning, such as the "Explanation of the Intention Decided," and seek the intention of the sutras of provisional meaning. As it says in the sutra itself: "Bhagavan, just as malt is sought in all the medicinal formulas of powder and the extraction formulas of essence, so too, starting from the non-existence of the nature of all dharmas, similarly, from the non-existence of birth, the non-existence of cessation, the peace from the beginning, and the complete nirvana by nature, this definitive meaning taught by the Bhagavan should also be sought in all the sutras of provisional meaning." Because it is said that if the meaning of mere consciousness were truly established, then afflictions such as desire would not cease, because they are also truly established by the nature of mere consciousness. If what is truly established cannot be destroyed by opposing factors, if you say so, then, in order to show the difference between nature and the adventitious, it is said: This mind, in its nature of non-duality, is naturally luminous because it abides there. Because it arises in dualistic appearances due to the power of habit, defilements are adventitious. Afflictions such as desire and dualistic appearances are not in accordance with the nature of the mind, because they are temporarily related due to the power of conditions. Thus, afflictions such as desire are adventitious, because they are seen to be related to the mind when conditions such as improper attention are near, but they do not follow in all states of mind. Whatever is the nature of something is not a delusion about it, like the heat of fire or the moisture of water. If it is thought that because the mind free from dualistic appearance is not seen, dualistic appearance is in accordance with the nature of all minds, that is not correct, because the mind arises in dualistic appearance due to the power of habit. For example, crystal is clear by nature

Just as a mani jewel appears in various ways due to conditions. Therefore, this mind is naturally luminous and abides as a non-dual essence. If it is free from habitual tendencies, it arises as non-dual, because there is no cause for the arising of dualistic appearances. Therefore, this unreal conceptualization of the present moment focuses on two dharmas, thus appearing as dualistic, and is the essence of experiential awareness. The first arises from the accompanying conditions of habitual tendencies, and therefore can be separated as it is temporary. The second arises from the power of its own close appropriation, and therefore follows its own nature and will never change. Thus, through familiarizing oneself with the antidote, the stains of dualistic appearances, etc., in the mind-stream of the one who familiarizes themselves will gradually be reversed. However, the mere essence of experiential awareness does not increase or decrease in any way. Nevertheless, when all the habitual tendencies of dualistic appearances are abandoned, the subsequent continuum of mind, the very nature of the mind that is free from all characteristics such as dualistic appearances, like the clear autumn sky, will be realized by the yogi's own wisdom of awareness. At that time, one will obtain the terms such as having become completely abiding and having directly realized the Dharmakaya. To summarize these meanings: Like the stains in gold and water, The temporary will eventually disappear. Because there is no distinction in nature, It is never possible to change. Therefore, purify the stains with the path, Luminosity has no increase or decrease. Like a swan separating milk from water, Skilled at distinguishing the stains of nature. Thus, two verses were spoken. If one wonders how the Mind-Only school establishes the distinction between the two truths, Conventional truth and ultimate truth, Is reasonable for the Mind-Only school. Thus, in the appearance of unreal conceptualization, the imputation of a person and phenomena is an obscuration to seeing reality and is the object of complete affliction, therefore it is called conventional truth. Emptiness as it has been analyzed is the object of complete purification, therefore it is called ultimate truth. For the Mind-Only school, the distinction between the two truths is reasonable.
