Due to the influence (of sectarianism), it led to a great schism in the Sangha. Therefore, it temporarily split into two groups and remained: the Mahasanghika and the Sthavira. Among them, the Mahasanghika sect also gradually split, evolving into eight factions, namely: those with the same name as the Mahasanghika sect, those who speak of transcendence, the polymaths, those who speak of permanence, the Chaityakas, the Eastern Mountain School, and the Western Mountain School. The Sthavira also gradually split, evolving into ten factions, namely: the Sthavira, the Sarvastivada, the Vatsiputriya, the Dharmottariya, the Bhadrayaniya, the Sammatīya, the Bahuśrutīya, the Dharmaguptaka, the Kāśyapīya, and the Uttarapathaka. Among them, the second name of the Sthavira is also called the Himavata. The other names of the Sarvastivada are also called the Vibhajyavāda, the Hetuvada, and some also say Mūlasarvāstivāda. The other names of the Sammatīya are Santika and Kaurukullaka. The second name of the Kāśyapīya is also called the Kāśyapīya. Some also say that the Uttarapathaka is the Transference School. The second version is that the time, place, and reasons for the split are the same as before, but the fundamental divisions are three: the Sthavira, the Mahasanghika, and the Vibhajyavāda. The Sthavira has two: the Sarvastivada and the Vatsiputriya. The Sarvastivada also has two: the Self-School and the Sutra School. The Vatsiputriya also has four: the Sammatīya, the Dharmottariya, the Bhadrayaniya, and the Six Cities School. Thus, the Sthavira is divided into six. The Mahasanghika also has eight: the Self-School, the Eastern Mountain School, the Western Mountain School, the Royal Mountain School, the Snow Mountain School, the Meaning Accomplished School, the Chaityakas, and the Cowherd School. The Vibhajyavāda also has four: the Earth Theory School, the Kāśyapīya, the Dharmaguptaka, and the Red Robe School. The third version is that one hundred and thirty-seven years after the Blessed One passed into Nirvana.

Later, King Delight and the Lotus Great One, etc., gathered in the city of Pataliputra, and most of the noble ones attained the fruit of nirvana without rebirth. At that time, the venerable Mahakashyapa, the venerable Great Hairs, the Great Giver, Lama Pa, Ravata, and others, each having attained correct view, the Sangha of Arhats dwelt thus. The evil demon became an invincible force to all good ones, and wearing the guise of a bhikshu, displayed various magical powers, creating a great schism in the Sangha on the basis of five points. The upholders, named Naga, and the learned ones named Intent Holder, praised these five points. These five points are: to teach accordingly, and to answer others in this way, ignorance, doubt, complete investigation, and the belief that self-destruction is the path, saying, 'This is the teaching of the Buddha.' Thus, the Sangha split into two factions and remained: the Sthaviras and the Mahasanghikas. In this way, for sixty-three years, the Sangha was divided and became a place of contention. Later, two hundred years after the Teacher's passing into nirvana, the descendants of the Sthaviras correctly compiled the Dharma. After his correct compilation, the Mahasanghika Sangha split into six parts, and it is said that the Sthaviras split into twelve parts and remained. Master Shakya Light believes that seventeen other schools split off from the Sarvastivada itself. The Chinese abbot, in the commentary on the Differentiation Treatise, says that the Sarvastivadins and the Mahasanghikas each split into ten schools, totaling twenty schools. The fifth is: Having taken the conduct of the Buddha's Shravakas, one will accomplish great benefit for beings. Thus it is said. The eighteen schools seem to be regarded as emanations of the Buddha, but this is merely speculation, without any knowledgeable doctrine or reasoning. Because all those who hold the tenets of the schools are ordinary beings who cling to reality. In particular, there are four aspects to generating bodhicitta and giving: the special qualities of being in accordance with the three vows, identifying the root of bodhicitta as the motivation of compassion, and practicing the six perfections as the object of learning.
