The characteristic of sound is: that which arises and becomes the object of auditory consciousness. It is divided into eight aspects, such as grasping. The characteristic of taste is: that which arises and becomes the object of tongue consciousness. It is divided into six aspects, such as sweetness. The characteristic of smell is: that which arises and becomes the object of nose consciousness. It is divided into four, such as fragrance. There are two kinds of tactile objects: those that arise and those that are transformed from arising. The first is: the tactile object that is the source of resultant form. The characteristic of tactile objects that arise is: that which arises and becomes the object of body consciousness. It is divided into the nature of the four great elements and eleven aspects such as smoothness and roughness. Among these, all forms, in terms of their essence, can be summarized into two: color and shape. The fundamental divisions of color are four: blue, yellow, white, and red. Each of these has two types: composite, such as dyed blue cloth, and innate, such as blue lotus flowers. The eight, such as long, are shapes. Among them, that in which color particles gather and extend in one direction is long. Shorter than that is short. That in which color particles are evenly distributed around is round. That which is evenly distributed from all sides is flat, that is, existing as a square. That in which color particles gather and are mostly arranged in the center is high; that in which they are less is low. That which is even without high or low is flat. That which has high and low is uneven. The eight, such as clouds, are differences in color. Among them, cloud and smoke are merely names. Dust is a windstorm. Khugrna is the roaring of the south wind. Shadow is: even without a difference in appearance, form appears. The sun is the sun's rays. Appearance is: the light of the moon, stars, fire, and jewels, etc. Darkness is: where colored objects cannot be seen. These distinctions of form are shown because they are the objects of eye consciousness, and because they obstruct the understanding of other colored objects, they are also forms with obstructive touch. Sound arises from the cause of grasping great elements and from the cause of non-grasping great elements. Each of these is divided into two: speaking in sentient beings and not speaking in sentient beings.

Four. Among these, that which arises from the cause of the possessed great elements and appears as sentient beings is like the sound of speech. That which does not appear as sentient beings is like the sound of the hand. That which arises from the cause of the unpossessed great elements and appears as sentient beings is like the sound of the speech of an emanation. That which does not appear as sentient beings is like the sound of wind and the sound of trees. Each of these four can be divided into two: agreeable, which benefits the ear sense, and disagreeable, which does not benefit. Thus, there are eight types. Odors are divided into two: pleasant, which benefits the nose sense, and the opposite of that. Each of these can be divided into two based on whether they are small or large in proportion, equal or unequal. Thus, there are four types. Tastes have six root divisions: sweet, like the taste of tree honey; sour, like the taste of emblic myrobalan; salty, like the taste of salt; hot, like the taste of long pepper; bitter, like the taste of bitter gentian; and astringent, like the taste of chebulic myrobalan. The branch divisions of these root tastes, when mixed together, are infinitely numerous. Tangible objects are divided into the elements and the derived. The first of the four elements is earth, which appears to the body consciousness as hard and cohesive. Water appears as moist and liquid. Fire appears as warm, or if it is too strong, it burns. Wind appears as light and moving. Among the derived tangible objects, smoothness is tolerable, like the tangible object of earwax. Roughness is intolerable, like the tangible object of thorns, etc. Heaviness is like making the end of a scale point downwards. Lightness is the opposite of that. Coldness is when water and wind combine, and when any tangible object is encountered, warmth is sought. Hunger is a special characteristic of tangible objects in which the wind element is predominant, and it causes the desire to seek food that is called "hunger." Thirst is a special characteristic of tangible objects in which the fire element is predominant, and it causes the desire to seek drink that is called "thirst." Therefore, hunger and thirst are, in order, the mental phenomena of desire to seek food and drink. The tangible objects that cause these mental phenomena are called hunger and thirst, which is naming the cause with the name of the effect. Sound and the other four objects
