That is the yoga. It is also said, in the Lankavatara Sutra: "The meditation of children's play, the meditation of distinguishing meanings, the meditation of focusing on suchness, the meditation of the Tathagata, if practiced by yogis, they will see shapes like the sun and moon, shapes like light and lotuses, and see lines like space and fire. Those various signs will lead astray to the paths of non-Buddhists. They will also fall into the realm of practice of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. If those signs are completely abandoned and become without appearance, then the hands of the Buddhas and gods, coming from all the fields, will anoint their heads. This is the sign of truly following." Thus it is said. Among them, with "shapes like the sun and moon," etc., it is shown that the wrong paths of meditators and others should not be trusted in the reversed samadhi. With "abandoning those signs and becoming without appearance," etc., the nature and benefits of the true samadhi to be taken by meditators and others are shown. Fourth, the measure of the arising of vipashyana is: as long as one examines and meditates with the wisdom of individual analysis, until the bliss of pliancy is not born from its power, at that time, although it is the wisdom that examines that very suchness in various ways, having the aspect of meditation, it is called being in accordance with vipashyana, but it is not the actual vipashyana. When the wisdom that examines that very suchness can bring about the bliss of pliancy, then it is the actual vipashyana. As it is also said in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra: "Bhagavan, until the pliancy of body and mind is not obtained, how does one contemplate on those non-existent dharmas, in the realm of practice of samadhi, contemplating within the image? What is this? Maitreya, it is not vipashyana, but it should be said to be in accordance with the aspiration that is in accordance with vipashyana." And also in the Prajnaparamita Upadesha: "He abides in that very nature of extreme pliancy of body and mind, and thus one should individually examine the meaning of that very nature as thought, with aspiration in the realm of practice of the inner samadhi image, as it is said: the extreme pliancy of body and mind is not born.

As long as that exists, it is the mental activity that is in accordance with vipassanā. When it arises, that is vipassanā. Thus it is said. Furthermore, the yogi who practices śamatha, as long as vipassanā with characteristics has not arisen, in order to obtain union, should alternately meditate on śamatha and vipassanā. For example, like this, when the vipassanā of repeatedly examining reality with wisdom is predominant, just as a lamp is moved by the wind, reality will not become clear. At that time, one should fix the mind single-pointedly on the object of śamatha and meditate on śamatha. When śamatha has been meditated on and śamatha has become predominant, one should meditate on the wisdom that discriminates reality. In this way, by constantly training through the two, reverence and constant application, one will obtain the yoga of union in which śamatha and vipassanā enter equally. The third, the manner in which śamatha and vipassanā are united, is that when vipassanā with characteristics is obtained, union will be obtained. So the reason for this is that śamatha and vipassanā are bound to each other, so they will not be separated. For example, like this, the vipassanā bound by śamatha is, just as śamatha naturally enters its own object, so vipassanā also naturally enters the meaning of reality and will not be distracted to other places. The śamatha bound by vipassanā also, like vipassanā, performs the function of clarifying reality, and will not be confused about the meaning of reality. In this way, it is also said in listening: By how much will śamatha and vipassanā be mixed, and equally united, and by what is it called the path of union? It is said: From the nine ways of abiding in the mind, like this, having obtained the ninth way of abiding equally, and relying on the samādhi that is completely accomplished, one should strive to distinguish the dharmas with superior wisdom. At that time, for distinguishing the dharmas, the path will naturally enter, and it will enter effortlessly, just like the path of śamatha, because there is no manifest activity, so vipassanā is completely purified, completely tamed, and is the after-
