have passed away, and will be completely controlled by ease and comfort. Therefore, shamatha and vipassanā will merge and operate together, and it is called the path of merging and operating together of shamatha and vipassanā. As it is said in the last part of the *Stages of Meditation*: "If at any time, because of being separated from sinking and excitement, one can enter equally and operate naturally, then at that time, the mind will become very clear. At that time, one should relax the effort and maintain equanimity. At that time, one should recognize that the path of union of shamatha and vipassanā has been accomplished." Although the way of union is like that, which of the two, shamatha and vipassanā, should the yogis mainly practice? There are two kinds of yogis: those with dull faculties who mainly practice shamatha, and those with sharp faculties who mainly practice vipassanā. The first are those who are outside of this Dharma. They mainly practice shamatha, so they obtain the actual basis of meditation and possess supernormal powers. Even if they obtain the mind up to the peak of existence, they will not be liberated from samsara because they lack the vipassanā that discriminates the reality of the two selflessnesses. As it is said in the *Elimination of Sorrow*: "The five great sages have supernormal powers, and can travel far in the sky, but they do not have the ability to go to where is the realm of immortality." It is also said in the *Praise of the Praiseworthy*: "Those who do not incline to your teachings, who are blinded by ignorance, even if they reach the peak of existence, will still generate suffering and create existence." Those with sharp faculties who practice vipassanā refer to the yogis of this Dharma. Even if they have not obtained the actual basis of meditation, relying only on the shamatha of the preliminary stage of the first dhyana, they practice vipassanā with the wisdom that separately examines the reality of the two selflessnesses. By the power of mainly practicing vipassanā, they can be separated from desire in the three realms, and thus attain nirvana. As it is said in that very text: "Those who follow your teachings, even if they have not obtained the actual basis of meditation, can eliminate all existences like grinding away the cataract of the demon's eye."

Thus it was said. Therefore, those who wish for their own well-being should, like the Bodhisattva Sadāprarudita, without regard for their body and life, seek the Prajñāpāramitā, the Middle Way. The main practice of cultivating the two bodhicittas has been explained. Third, the subsequent activities are twofold. First, the activity of rising from meditative equipoise: Having risen from the meditative equipoise of calm abiding as explained above, without immediately breaking the cross-legged posture, one should think thus: "I have not previously known such profound samādhi. My mind, like an untamed wild horse, wanders outward, disturbed by karma and afflictions, and I will experience immeasurable suffering." Thinking, "Like me, sentient beings in saṃsāra also suffer due to mental wandering!" one should generate great compassion and think, "I shall place sentient beings in profound samādhi." Thus, one generates the mind of enlightenment. When rising from having been in meditative equipoise on selflessness, one should think thus: "I have not previously realized suchness in this way. By clinging to selflessness as self, I will suffer!" Thinking, "Like me, sentient beings in saṃsāra also experience immeasurable suffering by grasping selflessness as self!" one should manifest great compassion focused on the Dharma and think, "I shall teach sentient beings the profound suchness of selflessness." Thus, one generates the mind of enlightenment. When rising from having been in meditative equipoise on the selflessness of phenomena, one should also think: "I have not previously realized such a profound nature of phenomena. By clinging to phenomena, which are like illusions, as real, I have experienced immeasurable suffering in saṃsāra. Like me, all sentient beings also suffer by clinging to phenomena, which are like illusions, as real!" Having manifested great compassion without object, one should think, "I shall teach sentient beings the profound suchness of all phenomena being empty of inherent existence." Thus, one generates the mind of enlightenment. Second, the activity of rising from the physical posture: Having manifested the generation of the mind as described above, one should slowly release the cross-legged posture, visualize the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding in the ten directions as if they were directly in front of one, and offer prostrations and offerin
