Neither exists, nor can it be determined. Thus, the relationship between seed and sprout is unborn and unceasing, not coming and not going, neither one nor different, neither permanent nor discontinuous. Just as the seed and sprout are, so should the nature of all dharmas be examined separately. After that, one should contemplate the inner dependent arising. First, one should examine the way that accords with and does not accord with afflictions in this way: From beginningless time, the continuity of birth and death is called samsara. Is it sentient beings that revolve, or merely formations? First, it is unreasonable, because if one searches for the aggregates in five ways, one cannot find anything called a sentient being. Formations also do not revolve, because permanence does not possess the function of continuing from one life to the next, and impermanence, because of its momentary destruction, the function of revolving is unreasonable. Therefore, samsara does not truly exist as anything else, but is merely a designation. As it says in the "Sālu Sprout Sūtra": "What is the inner dependent arising, and what is cause and dependent arising? That is, conditioned by ignorance, there is formation; conditioned by formation, there is consciousness; conditioned by consciousness, there is name and form; conditioned by name and form, there are the six sense bases; conditioned by the six sense bases, there is contact; conditioned by contact, there is feeling; conditioned by feeling, there is craving; conditioned by craving, there is grasping; conditioned by grasping, there is becoming; conditioned by becoming, there is birth; conditioned by birth, there is aging and death, and sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair arise. Thus, this entire great mass of suffering arises." As it is said, the twelve links beginning with ignorance are the nature of the three afflictions, and from beginningless time, they continuously operate like a wheel of fire, and are merely designated as samsara. One should examine them separately in this way. After that, one should also meditate in this way on the way that accords with and does not accord with purification: Nirvana

What is this called? Is it a sentient being or the root of action? First, it is unreasonable because the mind arises in dependence on the aggregates, and nirvana is the cessation of the aggregates. It is also unreasonable for action to become nirvana, because it is contradictory for whatever is permanent or impermanent, having previously existed in samsara, to later become nirvana. Therefore, in reality, there is not even a little that is called nirvana, but nominally, because ignorance ceases, therefore from the cessation of action, to the cessation of birth and the cessation of aging and death, the cessation of the twelve links of dependent origination, it is merely the establishment of the term nirvana. As it is said in the Root Wisdom: "Whatever is the support or the supported, that is neither the support nor the supported, it is called nirvana." Like that. How do these twelve links cease? Again, as it says therein: "Through the exhaustion of karma and afflictions, there is liberation. Karma and afflictions arise from conceptual thought. That arises from proliferation, and proliferation ceases through emptiness." Like that, from seeing emptiness in the manner of not seeing emptiness, ignorance ceases in the manner of not ceasing, and therefore the remaining links do not arise. Thus, for the twelve links of dependent origination, both the forward and reverse flow, and those that are in accordance with and contrary to the path of liberation, are cultivated, thereby knowing the flow and reversal of samsara. In particular, for the twelve links of dependent origination in the past, future, and present, the way they connect in three sets across three lifetimes, like a wheel of fire without beginning or end, should be understood from oral instructions. Thus, after a yogi has gained stability in the samadhi of shamatha and vipashyana, in order to integrate shamatha and vipashyana, one should train in the samadhi of union that possesses all supreme aspects. This is also as it is said in the Sutra Requested by Ratnakuta: "Having donned the armor of loving-kindness and abiding in the state of great compassion, one should meditate on the direct realization of emptiness that possesses all supreme aspects. So, what is the emptiness that possesses all supreme aspects? It is that which is not separate from generosity, not separate from ethics, patience
