It is also the main obscuration. As stated in the Uttaratantra, "Whatever is the conceptualization of the three spheres, that is considered the obscuration of knowledge." Therefore, those who wish to abandon the two obscurations and attain liberation and omniscience must abandon the root of the two obscurations, which is the attachment to real entities. This must be abandoned by negating the true existence of objects. As stated in the Pramāṇavārttika, "Without refuting this object, it is not possible to abandon it." Third, elaborating on the reasons for negating true existence is endless. In brief, things can be summarized as form and mind. For tangible objects such as mountains, they can first be divided into the four elements of earth, water, fire, and wind, and the four derived elements of form, sound, smell, and taste, making a total of eight substances. Then, by breaking down each of these into atoms, the mind that clings to them as a single gross entity is reversed. Even atoms can be divided into directional parts, thus reversing the mind's clinging to atoms. Therefore, there is no external object other than gross objects and atoms. Therefore, it is certain that external objects are not real. Similarly, the mind can be divided into past, future, and present. It is easy to determine that the past and future are unreal because they have ceased or have not yet arisen. The present mind can also be divided into six types: eye consciousness, ear consciousness, nose consciousness, tongue consciousness, body consciousness, and mind consciousness. Each of these should be understood as existing only for a moment, not remaining for a second moment after arising. In this way, the mind that clings to the mind as a single whole will be reversed. Then, further consider: does that very moment have three parts: arising, abiding, and ceasing? If not, then it is separate from arising, abiding, and ceasing, and therefore it will not be a compounded phenomenon. If it does, then that single moment is contradictory, because it has three parts. Therefore, it should be determined that the moment itself, like an atom, is merely imputed by the mind. Therefore, since it is separate from the nature of one and many, it should be correctly determined that the mind is also unreal. Once it is determined that the mind is unreal, then the mental factors that depend on it can also be easily understood as unreal. For example, if there is no wall, there will be no picture depending on the wall.
