A Concise Guide to the Madhyamaka View. A Concise Guide to the Madhyamaka View. A Concise Guide to the Madhyamaka View. Homage to the Three Jewels. As the noble Maitreya said: Here, first, based on listening, proper attention arises. From proper attention, the wisdom of the realm of true meaning arises. From that, Dharma is attained. As the noble Nagarjuna also said: Without meditation, there is no wisdom, and without wisdom, there is no meditation. Whoever possesses both of these can cross the ocean of existence like the trail of a bird. As the noble Asanga also said: To what extent does one abide in the Dharma? If one does not rely on listening and contemplation, but only on the practice of meditation, one does not abide in the Dharma. If one does not rely on meditation, but only on the practice of listening and contemplation, one does not abide in the Dharma. If one relies on both and abides in both, then it is called abiding in the Dharma. As it is said, therefore, for the benefit of oneself and others, those who seek the state of liberation and omniscience should first listen well to the words of the Sugata and their pure commentaries from a virtuous spiritual friend, and thereby generate the wisdom born of listening that grasps the connection between words and meaning without error. Then, relying on valid reasoning such as reasons and examples, one should dispel the need for the meaning of what has been heard to become something else, and thereby generate the wisdom born of contemplation that correctly distinguishes the meanings of what exists and how it exists as they truly are. Then, relying on the diligence of reverence and constancy, through the practice of single-pointed concentration on the object of focus and the wisdom that correctly distinguishes the true meaning, one should meditate on the path of the union of calm abiding and insight, and thereby generate the wisdom born of meditation that realizes the nature of reality. Among these, the wisdom born of listening is generated by listening to the Abhidharma treatises of varying lengths to distinguish the extent of phenomena, and by listening to the Madhyamaka treatises of varying lengths to distinguish the nature of reality, and by observing and so on.

Hereafter, wisdom born of thought should be generated through the two aspects of distinguishing how many and distinguishing what is. Among these, first, it should be ascertained that all these dharmas, in summary, are the six internal realms of eye and so forth, the six external realms of form and so forth, and the six consciousness realms of eye consciousness and so forth. These eighteen realms are only this much; there is neither more nor less. Among these, the eye realm arises from the cause of the four elements, is the condition for eye consciousness, and possesses form. Similarly, the ear, nose, tongue, and body realms also arise from the cause of the four elements, serve as the basis for their respective consciousnesses, and possess the characteristic of having form. The mind realm is the characteristic of serving as the basis for the mind consciousness of the immediately preceding six aggregates of consciousness. The form realm arises from the cause of the four elements, is the object of activity for eye consciousness, and possesses the nature of colors such as blue and yellow, and shapes such as long and short. Similarly, odors and tastes also arise from the cause of the four elements, and are the objects of activity for their respective consciousnesses. Odors include fragrant, foul, and neutral, and tastes include bitter, sour, spicy, sweet, salty, astringent, and so forth. Touchables are of two kinds: the four elements and what is transformed from the four elements. The former are earth, water, fire, and wind, which appear on the body in order as hard, moist, warm, and light and moving. Touchable transformations arise from the cause of the elements and appear to body consciousness as smooth, rough, light, heavy, and so forth. The dharma realm is the object of activity for mind alone. Among these are the three aggregates of feeling, perception, and formation, as well as the unconditioned. Because there are many dharmas, their characteristic distinctions and so forth are not written for fear of too many words. The eye consciousness realm is the consciousness that relies on the eye faculty and focuses on form. Similarly, from ear consciousness to mind consciousness, in order, the ear
