is the main one. Here, virtues become primary, and because the various transformations are completely pacified. The state in which those do not change is nature. From nature comes the great one, and the so-called great one is a synonym for intelligence. From the great one comes ego. That has three aspects: the transforming one, the courageous one, and the dark one. From the first come the five tanmatras: form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. From the five tanmatras come the five elements: earth, water, fire, wind, and space. From the second ego come the five organs of action: speech, hands, feet, anus, and genitals, and the five organs of intellect: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin, and the mind, which is the nature of both. Thus, eleven arise. The dark ego is the sphere of activity for both egos. Just as the Samkhyas acknowledge it, similarly, because of relying on slight differences in the self, the views of the self among the non-Buddhists become different. For example, the Vaisheshikas say that intelligence, happiness, suffering, desire, hatred, effort, dharma, non-dharma, and the force of combination are the nine qualities of the self. Among these, as long as the nine qualities of the self gather and exist in the self, it is called samsara because of performing virtuous and non-virtuous actions. When one realizes that the independence of the person, etc., is suffering, and cuts off the qualities of the self, such as intelligence, along with their root, then the self itself remains in a desolate state without qualities, and therefore it is called liberation. As it says in the Madhyamaka-hrdaya: 'The yogi who has cut off the qualities of the self, such as intelligence, and uprooted them, the self that remains in the mind, is known as the liberation of the Vaisheshikas.' Thus it is said. That self has the nature of non-abandonment, is permanent, is the agent, is the enjoyer of the ripening, has qualities in the state of samsara, and because it is pervasive like space, it is also said to be without action. Some say that it has the action of contraction and expansion. Those who speak of the Vedas say:

Just as the space within different containers like pots, some say that there is a single "I" that appears diverse due to different bodies. Second, to refute this, including: refuting the nature of the "I," refuting the characteristics of the "I," and revealing that the "I" is not the basis of self-grasping. First: Because it is separate from birth, like the child of a barren woman. Therefore, such an "I" does not exist. This should not be the basis of self-grasping either. Nor is it desired to exist in the conventional sense. As mentioned before, such a permanent and enjoyer-like "I" does not exist, because it is separate from birth, like the son of a barren woman. Therefore, such an "I" should not be the basis or object of self-grasping for worldly beings, because it has not arisen. This "I" not only does not exist in the ultimate sense and should not be the object of self-grasping, but it is also not desired to exist in the conventional sense, because it has not been observed. Second, refuting the characteristics: Because there are differences between treatises, whatever is asserted by the non-Buddhists is refuted by the reason of non-arising, which is accepted by our own school. Therefore, those characteristics do not exist either. Because in the treatises of the Samkhya and Vaisheshika schools, etc., the characteristics of the "I" such as permanence and being an enjoyer, etc., that are asserted do not exist, because they have not arisen. Like the son of a barren woman, refuted by the reason of non-arising, which is accepted by our own school. Therefore, all the characteristics of the "I" do not exist either. In short, the "I" is not permanent, nor is it an enjoyer, etc., because it has not arisen, like the son of a barren woman. Therefore, there is no "I" separate from the five aggregates, because apart from the five aggregates, the grasping of "I" cannot be established. Because it is so, therefore there is no "I" that is separate from the five aggregates and distinguished by permanence, etc. If it existed, then just as consciousness is different from form, it should be able to be grasped as different from the five aggregates. However, apart from the five aggregates, the grasping of the "I" distinguished by permanence, etc., cannot be established. Third, revealing that it is not the basis of self-grasping: Not only does the "I" not exist separate from the five aggregates, but it is also not desired to be the basis of worldly self-grasping mind, because even those who are not wise regard it as "I."
