If you say that the arrangement of forms and so on is "self," but not merely the collection, that is also not correct. Because, if you say it is shape, shape exists in things with form. If you think that things with form themselves are "self," then the nature of the aggregation of mind and so on is not "self," because they have no shape, because they are not things with form. Furthermore, the taker and the taken cannot be the same thing, otherwise, the action and the actor would become the same. The taker, "I," and the things to be taken cannot be the same, if so, the action and the actor would become the same, which is not desirable, because the form that has the great elements as its cause, as well as the pot and the potter, would also become the same. As it says in the treatise: "If wood is fire, the actor and the action become the same." It also says: "The nature of fire and wood, and the order of what is taken, together with pots, felt, etc., have all been explained in detail." If you think that there is no actor, only action, that is wrong. If you think that there is no taker who is the actor, but only the collection of takers such as form as action, that is also not correct. Because without an actor there is no action. This is not because without an actor there is no cause, so there is no action. Therefore, where it is said that "no actor is found, but there is action and ripening," there it should be understood that the true actor is negated. The actor who is established in dependence and is a part of convention is not negated, as it is widely said in the sutras: "The person who is associated with ignorance also accumulates merit and also accumulates demerit." Third, showing what is established in dependence: Because the Muni said that "I" is the six elements of earth, water, fire, wind, consciousness, and space, as well as the eyes, etc.

Because it is shown by relying on the six elements, and grasping the mind and mental phenomena, it is definitely said, therefore it is not the same as those, nor is it just an aggregate, therefore one should not arise with self-grasping towards them. Why? The Able One said in the sutra: "Great King, a person is the six elements, the six places of contact, and the eighteen mental activities." Thus, the self is shown by relying on the six elements such as earth and water, and the six places of contact from eye-contact to mind-contact, and relying on the six pleasant mental activities on the six objects such as form, the six unpleasant mental activities, and the six neutral mental activities, a total of eighteen mental activities, and grasping the mind and mental phenomena, it is nominally established as self. Why? Because it has been definitely declared that the self is nominally established through the gate of the elements, etc., therefore the self is not those phenomena, nor is it just an aggregate of them. Why? Because the phenomena mentioned above cannot be taken as the self, therefore one should not arise with self-grasping towards those phenomena. Thus, the aggregates are not the object of self-grasping, nor are they different from the aggregates, therefore, since there is no object of self-grasping, the yogi does not perceive a self, and also knows that what belongs to the self is not meaningful, and eliminates all conditioned phenomena, and attains peace in non-attachment, therefore this analysis that there is no self that is either the same as or different from the aggregates is truly excellent. Fourth, the fault of not abandoning self-view: When realizing no-self, one abandons the permanent self, and this is also not desired as the basis of self-grasping, therefore it is very rare to say that knowing no-self can completely eliminate self-view. When a yogi realizes no-self, at that time, he abandons the permanent self that is different from the aggregates by realizing its non-existence. Such a self is not desired by worldly people as the basis or object of self-grasping, but they desire the aggregates as the object of self-grasping, therefore the non-existence of the permanent self that is different from the aggregates

To say that seeing (the selflessness of persons) can completely eradicate the seeds of clinging to the aggregates, etc., as self is utterly ridiculous, because there is no connection between the two. To clarify this with an example, it is explained: Seeing a snake dwelling in a crack in one's own wall, dispelling doubts by saying, "There are no elephants here," and then trying to abandon the fear of snakes—alas! This only becomes a source of amusement for others. For example, someone sees a snake coiled in a crack in their own wall, and dispels the doubt of snakes by saying, "There are no elephants here," and then tries to abandon the fear of snakes. To others with knowledge, this becomes a source of laughter, because the absence of elephants cannot eliminate the fear of snakes. Similarly, according to this way of speaking, saying that the aggregates, etc., and consciousness are "self," then, because there is no permanent self, one cannot eliminate the clinging to the aggregates, etc., as "self." Therefore, this person's samsara will not cease. Explanation of the selflessness of persons.
