If it is said, how does it not exist in terms of conventions? The non-Buddhist and Buddhist proponents want to attain an excellent state, like letting go of the previous branch of a tree and reaching for the next branch without grasping it. They want to enter that sole Suchness, completely abandoning things, such as the arising and ceasing known among worldly beings and even cowherds, and with bad conceptualizations, they perversely fabricate the reality, thereby falling from both truths and plunging into the great precipice of bad views. Therefore, to show that the sole Suchness cannot be harmed by worldly people, (it is said in the scripture:) "How can what is seen by an eye with a cataract harm the consciousness without a cataract? Likewise, a mind that has abandoned stainless wisdom does not harm the stainless mind." Refuting arising from another is not a refutation spoken in reliance on the consciousness of worldly people, but rather a refutation spoken in reliance on the vision of the noble ones. Therefore, just as what is seen by an eye obscured by a cataract cannot harm what is seen by a consciousness without a cataract, similarly, abandoning the wisdom of the stainless noble ones, the consciousness that engages in worldly conventions, even if it establishes arising from another and so forth, cannot harm the realm of the wisdom of the noble ones without the obscuration of ignorance, which is unborn and so forth. Therefore, when discriminating and analyzing the ultimate truth, the proponents who take the world as a measure are worthy of being laughed at by the noble ones. Second, regarding the nature of each of the two truths. First, to show the nature of the conventional truth, (it is said in the scripture:) "Because ignorance obscures its own nature, it is called conventional truth, Whatever is seen as true by it is a false convention, Thus the Victorious One has declared, false things are conventional." Because it makes beings deluded about reality, it is ignorance. Because it fabricates the reality of things as something else, it is a conventional truth that obscures the vision of its own nature. Such a conventional truth sees things as true and clings to them, because it has not entered into the reality of false dependent arising. That is the conventional truth, which the

Upaka said so. Thus, for the time being, dependent on afflictive ignorance, the conventional truth is established. That conventional truth is also established as merely conventional because noble Śrāvakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas who have abandoned afflictive ignorance see it as like an artificial object, an image. It is not the truth, because there is no presumption of being truly manifest. The mere conventional truth just spoken of also appears to noble ones with objects of experience that include appearances in the post-meditation state, because only non-afflictive ignorance is universally practiced. It does not appear in the meditative state, because all elaboration is completely pacified. For the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who have objects of experience without appearances, it does not appear at all, because all phenomena in every way are manifestly and completely awakened into the essence of the Dharmadhātu, in which the characteristics of elaboration are completely pacified. It is intended to completely reverse the course of mind and mental factors forever. How is this to be understood? There are two kinds of ignorance: afflictive and non-afflictive. The first is the cause of saṃsāra through manifest attachment to self and what belongs to self. The second is what generates the appearance of objects and subjects through manifest attachment to forms and other phenomena. The first is abandoned through familiarity with the selflessness of persons. The latter is abandoned through familiarity with the selflessness of phenomena. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have completely reversed both kinds of ignorance because their familiarity with the two selflessnesses is perfected. Therefore, no characteristics of persons or phenomena appear. If the Tathāgatas also have appearances of objects such as forms, then they would not have abandoned delusion, because false objects appear, like the consciousness of dreams and so forth. If they appear but there is no attachment to them as true, then they would not become delusion. When someone with cataracts sees hair streaks and double moons in the sky, it would follow that they are not deluded, because they do not think, "These are real hair streaks and double moons," and are not attached to them. If forms and so on
