Relying on the sutra "Prajnaparamita," they composed treatises, such as the "Commentary on Prajnaparamita" and "Madhyamaka," and so on. In these treatises, by abandoning the nature of the completely imputed, they fully explained the principle of no-character. After that, Aryadeva and others correctly received these treatises and transmitted and propagated them from one generation to another. Nine hundred years after the Buddha's Nirvana, Bodhisattva Maitreya, relying on the sutra "Samdhinirmocana Sutra" and others, composed treatises, such as "Yogacarabhumi," "Madhyantavibhaga," and so on. The teachers Asanga and Vasubandhu correctly received these treatises and widely propagated them. At that time, because the taste of the Buddha's Dharma was the same, there was no dispute between those who spoke of emptiness and those who spoke of existence. The above is a brief account of when and in what way commentaries on the Buddha's teachings arose. Now, this needs to be examined: Does the intention of the Tathagata's teachings reside in the four schools of thought, or not? It is not. Because the treatises of these four schools of thought are mutually contradictory. Otherwise, how would disputes arise between them? Therefore, if the intention of the Buddha's teachings resides in the four schools of thought, how could the teachings not be mutually contradictory? Speakers whose teachings are internally contradictory would not be omniscient, like the authors of the Vedas and so on. Furthermore, these four schools of thought also believe that only their own school is the intention of the Tathagata's teachings, and they think that other schools are not the intention of the Buddha's teachings, therefore they refute them with scriptural authority and reasoning. The intention of the scriptural authorities cited by other schools of thought to prove their own school is also explained in other ways. If one believes that other schools of thought are also the intention of the Buddha's teachings, then it would become a refutation of the Tathagata's teachings, and therefore one would not become a speaker of the Buddhist school of thought. If the four schools of thought have provisional and definitive meanings,

Although there are differences in meaning, there is no difference in whether or not it is the intention of the scriptures. Therefore, the proponents of the four schools also consider the tenets they accept to be the ultimate meaning, and regard other views as provisional, but they do not deny that they are the intention of the scriptures. If it is said that the other schools argue for the literal meaning of the provisional meaning as the true meaning, then, precisely because of this, that school is also a negation of the intention of the provisional meaning, because all proponents of schools believe that one should not cling to the literal meaning of the provisional sutras. If it is said that the other schools have been established as the meaning of the intention of the provisional sutras, then, do the provisional sutras and the definitive sutras contradict each other in their intended meaning? Or do they not contradict each other? If it is the former, then how to avoid the fault of self-contradiction in the Buddha's words? If it is the latter, then one's own school is the intention of the definitive meaning, so it is reasonable, while the other schools are the intention of the provisional meaning, so it is unreasonable, how is it appropriate to refute in this way? In this way, the proponents of the four schools will not become proponents of Buddhist schools, because some have already deviated from the intention of the scriptures. If it is said that there is no fault, then the scriptures spoken by the Tathagata indicate selflessness, thus surpassing the doctrines of the non-Buddhists, and the proponents of the four schools also all acknowledge selflessness. If this is the case, then how should we understand the saying in the sutra: "Among them, the Vaibhashika school is taught, the Sautrantika school is also the same, the Yogachara school is after that, and after that the Madhyamaka school is taught." That is not to say that the Buddha taught the four schools of doctrine to the beings to be tamed, but rather that in the future, four kinds of commentary schools will appear in Buddhism, and at that time the teacher should guide the disciples of inferior intelligence to gradually enter the doctrine in that way. Therefore, each of the four schools has a classification of the three vehicles in their respective doctrines, because the Tathagata taught the three vehicles. Other schools that are different from the school one accepts are those that are accepted by those who...
