Moreover, it itself will not become the object of designation, the effect. Because it is so, therefore, apart from the limbs such as form, there is no pot whatsoever. If it is thought that the pot is not the proximate cause of form, etc., but is an effect dependent on its own limbs such as tiles, and the tiles are the cause, then the pot is produced from the cause of tiles, etc., and the cause of tiles, etc., is produced from other causes such as gravel. Then, how does the tile, which is not produced from itself, produce another pot as an effect by its own nature? Therefore, the pot does not exist by nature. This way of refuting the pot should be applied to refuting all effects. Second, refuting that the aggregate possesses substantial existence: As analyzed by the reasoning mentioned above, just as there is no pot apart from form, so also there are no forms, smells, etc., apart from the great elements such as earth, water, fire, and wind, because that would lead to the fault of being without a cause. Also, just as there are no forms, smells, etc., apart from wind, etc., so also the elements are not established by their own nature without depending on each other. For example, here fire is the burner, and the three elements are the burnt. When fire burns only the firewood of the three elements, the firewood becomes hot and becomes fire itself, not the firewood to be burned. How can something that is not hot be burned? Because it is not related to fire. Since there is no other burnt object other than these two, if it is said that firewood that does not depend on fire exists by its own nature, then there is no firewood, because there is no cause, and there is no fire either. If it is thought that firewood is the nature of hardness, etc., and although it is not hot, it is suppressed by fire and becomes hot, so it is the burnt object, then why would it not become fire? Because it is the nature of heat. Or, if it is thought that when fire suppresses, the suppression is also not hot, because it is not considered hot, then if the firewood, which has become a different object from fire, has the nature of the three elements and is contrary to fire, it cannot be said that it has fire. Therefore, there are no elements.

If even a tiny spark turns into a flame, then these elements are not independent of each other, because it contradicts the statement that "they arise together, mutually causing each other." Furthermore, if fire has no wood, it becomes causeless, which is unreasonable. If it is said that the particles of fire's substance do not have the three elements, so there is fire without wood, then it will become fire without wood, and therefore, the fault of causelessness will become just that. Even without a cause, one would acknowledge permanent particles, like the Vaisheshikas. If, fearing the fault of causelessness, one imagines that the particles of fire have wood that is the nature of the three elements, then one should not acknowledge that the particles of fire have the nature of a single substance. Third, refuting composition from one and many: Not only are atoms not established as having a single nature, but upon thorough examination with reason, whatever external and internal objects are considered, that and that lack oneness. Just as the great elements do not exist independently of each other, it would follow that they are causeless, so the elements do not exist, and what arises from them also does not exist. Similarly, mind and mental factors, as well as characteristics and bases, do not exist independently of each other. Since by any reasoning there is no oneness in things, therefore there is no multiplicity either, because multiplicity depends on the collection of one. If this refutation is reasonable for one's own school, which acknowledges the co-arising of elements and what arises from them, etc., but not for outsiders, because they believe that wherever earth and other particles do not exist in other things, and there exists a permanent single substance of earth there, then in their system, the particles of earth also have three properties: substance-ness, oneness, and existence-ness, and in qualities, they also have three properties: quality-ness, oneness, and existence-ness. Therefore, in any system where all things, such as particles, have three properties, then there is no such thing as oneness. Similarly, in Samkhya, everything is of the nature of three qualities, so there is no single thing either.
