If it does not follow the body, then it is meaningless to examine the cycle of existence of the self that does not follow the body. If it does follow, then just as bodies are different in each life, so too would the person become different, because it follows the body. Therefore, that self of yours should not be different from the body, because it follows the changes in the body's form. For example, like a part of the body. It also should not be permanent, because it is not different from the body, like the very nature of the body itself. Second, refuting that the body is the instigator, there are two parts: the main text and, incidentally, stating what harms the permanent self. The first part is: If there is no self, then because there is no instigator, the body's movements and extensions, contractions, etc., would disappear, therefore, just as Devadatta is the instigator of the chariot, it is also necessary to acknowledge the person who is the instigator of the body, the inner agent. That is also unreasonable, the chariot is only instigated by one who possesses touch, not by one who does not. The self that you have completely examined is also one that does not possess touch, because there is no body at times. It is not possible for one thing to instigate another from a thing that does not possess touch, like space. Therefore, the body's extensions, contractions, and other movements, etc., the self will not become the agent. Therefore, it is unreasonable to infer the self from the body's movements. If, you also do not acknowledge that the mind, which does not possess touch, is the instigator of the body? As it was said before: The mind does not perceive actions such as going, etc., why is it that meritorious deeds, etc., are not seen, therefore in all actions, it is said that the mind is essential, it should be thus. Therefore, you have the same fault. I do not acknowledge that the mind does not possess touch, because the mental factor of contact, which is the nature of the meeting of object, sense, and consciousness, exists, because consciousness is connected with the body, so it will become the instigator of the body. You do not acknowledge that the self possesses touch, so it is not the same. Or, the mind is the cause of all phenomena, therefore it is reasonable to say that the wind element that arises from it possesses touch, and because it is instigated by it, the wind element possesses touch.

Secondly, if the self (ātman) were permanent, then poison and weapons, etc., could not harm it in any way, just as a diamond that is immune to harm cannot prevent woodworms in any way. Therefore, what reason is there that the non-harm (ahiṃsā) taught as a doctrine to protect the self from harm is not contradictory to this permanent self? I think it is completely contradictory, so either the permanent self should not be admitted, or another reason should be given, but since it is not given, this is unreasonable. Thirdly, refuting the proof of the permanent self: If the self is indeed permanent, it is because there is remembrance of past lives. It is not reasonable to remember other lifetimes for those conditioned things that perish as soon as they arise, but if the self is permanent, then it is reasonable to remember because it travels to other lifetimes. If you say that, it is also unreasonable, like this: Some people who were stabbed and died in a previous life can see the scars of previous wounds in this life, and remembering the past life, they recall, "This is where my body was stabbed before," and thus trace the past events. Therefore, if you say that the self is permanent because you remember the past life, saying, "I used to be like this and that," then because you see the scars of the wounds of the previous body and remember the past events of the previous body, why is your body not impermanent, but will become permanent? Therefore, the previous body and the present body cannot be different because of the cause and effect. Just as one remembers the past events by focusing on the present body, it is not reasonable to remember the past life because the person imputed based on the previous aggregates and the present self are not different. Furthermore, this self cannot remember the past life by its own nature, because it is a mindless nature. If you think that it is an act associated with mind, that is also unreasonable, because it will lead to abandoning one's own nature. For example, if the self is indeed a knower because it is endowed with the qualities of mind such as intelligence, then those qualities of the self that are endowed with mind will also become non-mindful because the self is associated with the mindless, and the mind of intelligence, etc., without the self
