As for the view that tends to destroy the relationship of past cause and effect, the wise counteract it from afar with the mantra of dependent origination, just like a seed encountering fire. If the continuity of the fruit, such as a sprout, does not exist, it will become annihilation. Because from the cause, which is the seed, the fruit, which is called the sprout, arises, then the cause, which is the seed, will not be annihilated. If the sprout grows, but the seed's own state remains unchanged, it will become permanent. Because the seed's thing changes, it is also not permanent. Both the seed and the sprout, because they do not have self-nature established, are neither the same nor different. This way of abandoning permanence and annihilation that you have spoken of, even in one's own school that asserts the momentary arising and ceasing of cause and effect, exists. Then, will they also not have the fault of permanence and annihilation? They, because they acknowledge that cause and effect are different things, when the fruit arises, cannot abandon the fault of the cause being annihilated, just like if there is a cow, the calf will not die. We consider that cause and effect are not different, so when the fruit arises, there is no fault of the cause being annihilated. Furthermore, they acknowledge that cause and effect are established by their own nature, so they cannot transcend permanence and annihilation. As it is said: If one acknowledges that things exist, then one will fall into the view of permanence and annihilation, because things are permanent and impermanent. From the Four Hundred Verses on the Yogic Practice, the explanation of the chapter called "Demonstrating the Meditation on the Refutation of Self," which is the explanation of the tenth chapter, is complete.
