Commentary on Chapter Ten. Commentary on Chapter Ten. Second, refuting the self and eliminating the fault of annihilation in non-self. First, in two parts: separate refutation, common refutation. The first has five points. First, refuting the Vaisheshika's self. In two parts: refuting the entity, refuting the proof. The first is: If something called "self" exists by its own nature, then because it is not seen in Nirvana, fearing annihilation, this worldling would become "supreme" etc. Answer: The self does not exist by its own nature. If it existed, it would necessarily become a man, woman, or hermaphrodite, because there is no other distinction. The heretics say that there are two selves, namely the inner and outer self. The first, dwelling inside the body and causing the aggregates of senses to engage with objects, is the inner agent, the object of ego-grasping, and the enjoyer of the fruits of virtue and non-virtue. The outer self is the nature of the collection of body and senses, which benefits the inner self. If the inner self is conceived as a woman, since its nature is not to abandon its own nature, even if it transmigrates to another life, since it does not depend on others, it will always be a woman. But this is not the case, because confusion is also seen, and womanhood etc. are not qualities of the self. Therefore, when the inner self is not a woman, and as stated above, is not a man, nor a hermaphrodite, then it is only due to ignorance and the power of delusion that you think, "I am a man," "I am a woman," "I am a hermaphrodite," just as one mistakes a rope for a snake because one does not know its own nature. If man etc. are external signs, and because of their connection, the inner self is also always man etc., then when the outer self, the four great elements that compose the body, do not exist by their own nature as man, woman, or hermaphrodite, if they did exist, then because of following their nature, all bodies would have definite signs, and soft things etc. also exist in the earth element, then those natural male and female etc. signs would also be seen, but this is not the case here. Since this is the case, why is the outer self, the earth

It is unreasonable to become male, female, or hermaphrodite by relying on oneself. If you also similarly cling to male, female, etc., based on the elements of the body, then it is the same fault. We are interdependent arising, so the elements are without inherent existence. For things without inherent existence, just like the men and women conjured by magicians, it is not contradictory to go from having no marks to later having marks, so there is no fault of definite marks in any situation. You say that the elements have inherent existence, and it is unreasonable for inherent existence to change, so the marks must be definite according to the inherent existence. Furthermore, in the world, there is no fire that is not hot. If I exist by my own nature, then what is the self of one person must also become the self of everyone. The object of your ego-grasping is not my self, because it is not the object of our ego-grasping, nor is it the object of attachment. Because it is so, the object of your ego-grasping is not your own thing, because it is not the definite object of everyone's ego-grasping. If there is no self, then from what cause do ego-grasping and attachment to self arise? As said before, because no self separate from the aggregates is found. Just as relying on the parts of a chariot leads to the designation of a chariot, so too, relying on impermanent and selfless phenomena such as form, one mistakenly thinks that there is a self, sentient being, life, birth-giver, power-born, agent, feeler, etc. Is it not so? It is indeed so. Second, refuting the proofs of self, in three parts. First, refuting that it is the cause of entering and returning to samsara. If the self exists by its own nature, then it is the cause of entering and returning to samsara. If there is no self, then who will perform virtuous and non-virtuous actions and experience their results, wandering in samsara? Who will strive for the path of liberation and attain liberation? Therefore, the self exists by its own nature. If you say so, if you say that I wander in life after life, then does this self follow the differences in bodies in other lives or not?
