Just as destruction occurs, the causal atoms are destroyed by the arising of the branched result, and therefore the causal atoms become non-eternal. If it is thought that the nature of the cause will not be destroyed, and that it will also produce a result that becomes something else, then in the place where there are causal atoms, there will not be the substance of the branched result, because two obstructive things do not exist in the same place. Therefore, just as a vase and a blanket are in different places, so cause and effect will not be the same. From this it is also evident that atoms are not permanent, because the smallest atoms do not enter into other atoms with all their essence, so atoms are obstructive, and obstructive things are not permanent, which is not seen anywhere, like vases and so on. Because atoms are not permanent, Buddhas never say that atoms are permanent, because they themselves have not seen it that way. The smallest atoms of the eight substances, which are imputed based on the eight substances, are not permanent, but exist by imputation, like a vase, and it only exists in aggregation, and does not exist as a solitary entity without a companion, so it cannot be expressed separately by the term 'smallest atom'. Fifth, refuting that the liberation of one's own school is permanent. Refuting the liberation of the self-nature of other schools. First, here the Vaibhashika and others of our own school say that atoms are not permanent, but what is said to be permanent exists, as it is said: 'Monks, the unborn, the unoriginated, and the unconditioned exist.' It is also said: 'Unconditioned dharmas are permanent.' Therefore, nirvana is permanent and should be attained by the truth of the path, and there is something that obstructs afflictions and birth like a dam that stops water. If it did not exist, it would not be said that there is a third noble truth after suffering and origination, because it is said, so it exists. Bondage is the truth of origination, because it makes the bound one without autonomy. Bondage is the truth of suffering, because it has become a slave to afflictions. The method of reversing them is the truth of the path.

Yes, because this pacifies all afflictions. These three truths are inferred to exist from afflictions and their cessation. Apart from these, there is no liberation characterized by the exhaustion of afflictions. If it existed, one would reasonably expect to observe some result, but if no beneficial action arises from it for the nature of bondage and liberation, then from what would one infer its existence? Because no action whatsoever arises from this, therefore, one does not speak of nirvana as liberation characterized by acting to prevent future afflictions and births. Afflictions and births do not arise because the cause is incomplete, and for that reason, examining liberation in another sense is meaningless. Speaking the words of the third truth is also not contradictory, because the words of the third truth express only that afflictions and births no longer arise. Furthermore, if nirvana were a real entity, it would have to depend on a skandha or a person, but that is also unreasonable. For example, the Blessed One said: 'Whatever suffering is completely abandoned, eliminated, exhausted, free from desire, ceased, pacified, extinguished, and suffering is no longer connected and no longer received, this is peace, this is excellent, that is, abandoning the continuum of skandhas, craving is exhausted, free from desire, cessation is nirvana.' From this sutra, it is known that in the state of nirvana, the skandhas do not exist, and the person who is nominally designated in dependence on them also does not exist. If it existed, it would contradict the sutra, and nirvana would not be liberated from samsara. Therefore, where afflictions and births are exhausted and become nirvana, where neither skandhas nor persons are seen, what nirvana dependent on this would exist? Therefore, nirvana is not permanent. The second is the refutation of substantiality and selflessness, the first of which is: The Samkhyas say: According to us, nirvana has no basis, so there will be no fault of non-liberation. For example, from knowing the difference between nature (Sanskrit: prakṛti) and the self (Sanskrit: puruṣa), to the order of arising of the great (Sanskrit: mahat) and so on, the collection of many changes is pacified in all ways, which is liberation.
