Come and observe anger, because its harm is obvious, it is easy to protect oneself from it. Ignorance is similar to abandoning the middle way, appearing in an intermediate way, and one does not trust it, so it is easy to defend against. Desire, on the other hand, is like a non-friendly enemy disguising itself as a good friend to deceive, stealing the wealth of good deeds. Clearly an enemy, yet accompanied by inner peace, it arises in the continuum of a person in the guise of a friend. Therefore, regarding desire, you must not be unafraid and must especially protect yourself from it. Isn't it even more important to carefully abandon what disguises itself as a useless and harmful friend? Indeed, it should be so. So, how to defend against it? By always wholeheartedly dedicating oneself, relying on the antidote with outstanding diligence, not giving it the opportunity to arise. There are two types of desire: one is that past habits are similar, and due to repeated familiarity, it will arise effortlessly in this life; the other is that it arises due to the close causes of external objects. Among them, desire arising from external causes is easy to achieve through antidotes, because it will not arise if external causes are cut off. The other type of desire arising from internal causes is not so, because it is deeply rooted and difficult to stop with antidotes. Therefore, greater effort must be spent to stop it. Like desire, anger should also be carefully abandoned, because its faults are more serious than those of desire. For example, anger leads to holding grudges, firmly and securely clinging, it is necessarily completely unwholesome, burning one's own continuum, generating meaningless things such as harming others, and creating major sins such as the five heinous crimes. Therefore, in any case, by understanding the classification, basis, faults, and methods of abandoning afflictions, and relying on antidotes, one can cut off afflictions from the root and ultimately achieve liberation. Since the characteristics of desire and hatred have been spoken of, what are the characteristics of ignorance? Just as relying on the body, which is the basis of the senses, the senses of the body, such as the eyes, pervade the other senses and exist as their basis, so too, dependent origination.

The ignorance characterized by clinging to emptiness of inherent existence as truly existent pervades all afflictions such as desire and becomes their abode. Because desire and the like also impute based on whether the nature of things, which is thoroughly conceived by ignorance, is only attractive or unattractive, and because ignorance is primary. Therefore, just as when the sense faculties of the body cease, all the faculties cease, so too, all afflictions are destroyed by meditating on dependent arising and destroying ignorance. How should this ignorance, which is the root of all that is meaningless, be abandoned? If external and internal things had inherent existence, they should not depend on causes and conditions, because what is established cannot be established again. These are also seen to depend on their own causes and conditions. Therefore, since they are dependently arisen, they have no inherent existence. And the absence of inherent existence is emptiness. If one sees dependent arising as devoid of inherent existence in this way, then the ignorance of clinging to it as truly existent will not arise. And by abandoning that, all desires and the like that depend on it will also be abandoned. Thus, the method of abandoning ignorance, namely, teaching dependent arising itself, is of great importance. Therefore, with all effort, all the tenets that will be explained in this treatise should only expound the doctrine of the absence of inherent existence in dependent arising. Secondly, it is divided into: explaining the characteristics of those who engage in desire and the like, and explaining the methods of subduing them. The first part is: If the characteristics of desire and the like are stated, then how can one know the sentient beings who engage in them? Explaining its characteristics: Always liking dances that hold the ground, laughter, coquetry, flowers, fragrances, ornaments, and various gatherings of things such as colors, having a gentle and comfortable nature, being both a giver and an enjoyer, being clean and possessing wisdom, speaking pleasantly and frankly, and so on, these characteristics appear in a person with desire. The opposite of that is one who engages in hatred. Those who are mixed are ignorant.
