No. Secondly, the antidotes to afflictions and the common antidotes, two types. First, the functions of each affliction, the order in which they arise, and how to abandon them, these three. First, the substance and the way to guide individuals accordingly, two types. The first is: Wishing to abandon desire and so on, one should know their functions and then rely on their antidotes. Thus, the function of desire is to gather objects that are counted as sentient and non-sentient, because one clings to them with attachment. Its remedy is to abandon retinue and possessions. The function of anger is to quarrel and fight, that is, to turn away from everything. Its remedy is: not gathering assemblies, cultivating loving-kindness, and enjoying monasteries and other things that are pleasing to the mind. For example, just as the power of all elements such as fire is generated by wind, the function of ignorance is to nourish both desire and hatred, because one does not see faults in one's own object. Its remedy is to strive to discern the nature of things as they are. Although there are methods for abandoning desire and so on, why are these to be abandoned? Because they are the basis of suffering. Thus, desire is suffering from not encountering the desired object, anger is suffering from not having the army to destroy the powerful, and ignorance is suffering from not fully understanding the subtle meaning. When desire and so on overwhelm, not realizing these sufferings is even more suffering, therefore, these afflictions are to be abandoned like enemies holding weapons. The second is: Just as ignorance arises together with both desire and hatred, do desire and hatred also arise together? Just as it is seen that cold diseases arise from water and bile diseases arise from fire, and because they are incompatible, they cannot exist together, so it is not seen that anger and desire exist together in the same continuum, because attachment and aversion are mutually contradictory. Just as wind accompanies both cold and heat, ignorance exists together with both desire and hatred.

It should be entered. If attachment and aversion are not contradictory, then relying on the antidote of one will cause the other to increase. Therefore, having understood that attachment and hatred are contradictory, the spiritual teacher who tames disciples should treat those with attachment as if cutting off the whip of a slave, and should make them engage in work without interruption of the three doors. Because not being poor and not being stingy is the antidote to attachment. Because engaging in work does not find an opportunity to generate attachment. Those who are prone to anger should be treated like a lord, and should be respectfully served with abundant items such as food and Dharma robes. Because poverty and being respectfully served do not give rise to hatred, poverty is its antidote. Ignorance should be weakened by relying on poverty and non-poverty as appropriate. Being in accordance with attachment is non-poverty, and being in accordance with hatred is relying on poverty. Second, one must also determine the time when these afflictions arise, and then one should rely on the antidote at the appropriate time. For example, during the day one works, and at night most of the time is spent in sleep and drowsiness, and there is mostly phlegm, therefore, for sentient beings, the first time, in the morning, ignorance truly arises. Afterwards, because one engages in many activities such as farming and business, and because phlegm subsides and bile increases, anger will arise at noon between morning and afternoon. Afterwards, when the sun sets, the body is bathed, fragrant food is eaten, the senses are nourished, and all activities are completely finished, then attachment will arise. Thus, merely by following the faults of the body, the afflictions arise in three stages during the day. Therefore, having recognized these, the cautious person should prevent them in that way, according to reason. Third, a general presentation of the method of abandoning the three poisons, and two special presentations of the method of abandoning anger. First, the actual method of abandoning afflictions, and two characteristics of the individual who practices this, along with the object of focus. First, attachment sneaks into the guise of friendship and deceives the world, therefore one should strive to abandon it. For example, hatred is associated with displeasure, arising like an enemy.
