Explanation of Chapter Six. Explanation of Chapter Six. Second, the method of abandoning afflictions is taught. Thus, Bodhisattvas who wish to benefit beings, knowing that samsara is the place of all deterioration, should encourage beings to abandon its cause, karma and afflictions, in order to cut off its continuity. Among these, for the time being, the method of abandoning afflictions is taught, divided into two: refuting the antidote to abandoning the afflictions of others, and showing the antidote to abandoning one's own afflictions. First: If afflictions are to be abandoned, then they must be rectified from the point of abandoning their basis. Why did the Bhagavan allow the monks to fully enjoy luxurious things such as five hundred-story houses, hundreds of flavors of food, and countless clothes? These are in accordance with happiness, and happiness also increases attachment. Therefore, the path of mostly suffering should be practiced, like the naked ones. They are called ascetics because they endure the suffering of being afflicted by the heat and cold of wind and sun, their bodies become impure, and they endure the suffering of plucking hair, etc. If happiness increases attachment and should be abandoned, then if suffering increases anger, it should also be abandoned. Why are those with happiness not ascetics, and those with suffering ascetics? Furthermore, afflictions arise from imputing characteristics of pleasant and unpleasant, and not merely from enjoying objects that cause happiness and suffering. Otherwise, those afflictions should also arise in those who are free from attachment. In the teachings of the Bhagavan, in order to prevent those with attachment from generating attachment due to the power of objects, he taught abandoning the qualities of practice and reducing possessions, etc. In order to prevent those with hatred from generating hatred, he allowed abundant food, robes, monasteries, etc. Therefore, only the Shakyas are ascetics, because like those without attachment, those with attachment also engage in subduing afflictions by means of skillful methods. The outsiders are always tormented by the suffering of afflictions, and are tormented by the suffering of suffering, so they are not ascetics who subdue afflictions.
