They will commit acts such as killing. Therefore, the unpleasant words that come from lowly people are like minor flaws. If one rejoices because great harm such as killing and imprisoning has occurred, it is not appropriate to be angry. If someone says that there is no fault in punishing someone who scolds without fault, if the scolder is harmed in return, and there is no merit in reversing the harm previously done to me, then your respect for anger, which has no merit, is merely attachment and has no purpose. Thirdly, which wise person would tolerate scolding that has no merit? If, in the case of others speaking ill, etc., patience that does not distinguish the occasion and does not cause harm will effortlessly obtain great merit such as a beautiful form and rebirth in higher realms, then who is as foolish as the one who obstructs the cause of Dharma, the scolder? It is for the sake of wasting one's own merits. Therefore, whoever is patient with anger is the wise one. Furthermore, anger generally arises in a place of disharmony, but especially because it cannot harm the powerful, it does not arise. However, it only arises in the weak. Therefore, why do you respect that anger that destroys attachment? It is not appropriate to respect it. Destroying attachment is like being brave towards a woman, which is to be abandoned by noble men. If someone thinks that because one who is patient is despised because they cannot retaliate even if harmed, therefore one should be angry, patience is the antidote to increasing anger. Therefore, if one is patient in a situation where one should be angry, the meditation of loving-kindness will arise. Even if one meditates on the meditation of loving-kindness for just the time it takes to milk a cow, it will become habitual for the practitioner, and it will bring eight qualities, namely: gods and humans will rejoice, they will also protect, the mind will be at ease, happiness will increase, poison and weapons will not harm, one will effortlessly obtain benefits, and one will be reborn in the Brahma world. Even if one does not become liberated, one will obtain the eight qualities of the Dharma of loving-kindness, as stated in the Ratnavali.

Furthermore, by abandoning anger, one will attain meditative absorption and formless realms, etc. As mentioned above, patience is the abode of qualities. If you abandon patience out of fear of being despised for being unable to retaliate, that is purely your foolishness. This is because anger leads to many unrighteous things and destroys the excellent qualities mentioned above. If kings and other powerful individuals find it difficult to endure being belittled by those of lower status and therefore seek to punish them, those with minds should know that enemies pass from one to another without end. Therefore, which powerful king has ever completely destroyed all enemies, eradicated belittlement, and then departed for the next world? Even the powerful kings of the past did not eliminate belittlement, but rather, driven by contempt, engaged in warfare and other evil deeds, only to die. Therefore, I think it is better to endure contempt than to accumulate evil deeds in order to conquer enemies. This is because enduring contempt does not lead to hell, while committing evil deeds does. Secondly, the general antidote: If one cannot understand the antidotes to each affliction as described above, then one should counteract them by meditating on consciousness as being free from arising and ceasing, etc. Thus, consciousness arises from causes and conditions, and is therefore conditioned. Since it possesses the three characteristics of arising, etc., and since consciousness engages with objects moment by moment, it has no duration and no arising, just like the unconditioned. If there is no arising, how can there be impermanence? Therefore, consciousness is without inherent existence because it is free from arising, abiding, and ceasing. As it is said: Consciousness is like an illusion, declared by the kinsman of the sun. Whatever is without inherent existence is empty like a reflection. Therefore, all three realms of conceptualization are also empty. Therefore, any yogi who truly understands that the arising and abiding of consciousness, etc., are without inherent existence and are like reflections—if consciousness exists, then desire
