It is more excellent than other scriptures, as it is said: If someone speaks of the aggregates of persons, the Samkhya and Uluka in the world, and the naked ascetics, if there is a difference, ask those who speak of existence, non-existence, and cessation. Therefore, the teachings of the Buddhas are beyond immortality, existence, and non-existence. Such profound Dharma is said to be the essence of the Dharma. It is said. Therefore, all the scriptures of the Tathagatas ultimately lead to suchness and tend towards suchness. As it is said in the sutras: In thousands of world realms, whatever sutras I have spoken, the letters are different but the meaning is the same, and it cannot be fully proclaimed. If one contemplates one thing, all of them will become meditation. The many Dharmas of all the Buddhas, as they are taught, all Dharmas are without self. If wise people study this, it is not difficult to attain the Buddhadharma. It is said. Therefore, whatever sutras directly teach the conventional truth as a means are called provisional meaning, because it is only a means to lead sentient beings to the ultimate truth. Whatever sutras arise from means and directly teach the ultimate truth are called definitive meaning, because what is expressed here cannot be changed and is absolutely certain. This principle distinguishes between provisional and definitive meaning from the perspective of what is expressed. If we distinguish from the perspective of what expresses, then what is in accordance with the literal meaning and is not harmed by valid cognition is definitive meaning, while what is in accordance with the literal meaning but is harmed is called provisional meaning. Among them, what is harmed and not harmed by the valid cognition of children in the literal meaning are called provisional and definitive, respectively, depending on the conventional truth. What is harmed and not harmed by the valid cognition of the noble ones are called provisional and definitive, respectively, depending on the ultimate truth. The provisional and definitive meanings depending on the sentient beings to be tamed are that what is taught to ripen the immature sentient beings is provisional meaning; what is taught to liberate those who are mature and to bring those who are liberated to the ultimate end is definitive meaning. According to the first way of distinguishing, the first turning of the wheel of Dharma and

The latter two are taught based on the conventional truth, so they are provisional (drang don). The middle one is taught based on the ultimate truth of emptiness, so it is definitive (nges don). As it is said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "As the emptiness is taught by the Sugata, one should know the distinctions of the definitive sutras. Whatever teaches beings, persons, and individuals, all those teachings should be known as provisional." If considered from the perspective of the second distinction, the first teaching is definitive in relation to the conventional truth, because its literal meaning is not contradicted by the valid cognition of ordinary beings. The middle teaching is solely provisional, because what it teaches—emptiness, non-origination, etc.—contradicts valid cognition. The final teaching is also predominantly provisional, because its literal meaning is less significant. Furthermore, the directly stated ultimate meaning of the first and last teachings is provisional in relation to the ultimate truth, because it is contradicted by the valid cognition of the noble ones' non-conceptual wisdom. The directly stated meaning of the middle teaching—non-origination, etc.—is in accordance with the vision of the noble ones, so it is solely definitive. If considered from the perspective of the third distinction, the first teaching is solely provisional because it is taught for the purpose of maturing those who are immature. The middle teaching is taught for the purpose of liberating those who are mature, and the final teaching is taught for the purpose of bringing those who are liberated to complete fulfillment through the Great Vehicle. Therefore, the latter two are solely definitive. As it is said in the Dharani Lord King Sutra: "Son of good family, it is like this: a skilled gem cutter who knows well how to refine gems takes a precious gem that is not completely pure from the category of precious gems, soaks it in mild salt water, and then refines it by polishing it with a strand of hair. But he does not abandon his effort with just that. After that, he soaks it in thick food juice and refines it by polishing it with a woolen cloth. He does not abandon his effort with just that either. After that, he soaks it in the juice of great medicine and refines it by polishing it with thin gauze. One that is completely refined and free from impurities is called a great category of beryl. Son of good family, likewise, the Tathagata
