Thus it is said. The seeds of the suffering of hell, the result of non-virtue, are: killing and other physical misdeeds, lying and other verbal misdeeds, and great mental misdeeds such as covetousness. O King, you must strive with all your might to ensure that these three misdeeds are not present even as a speck of dust. Second, the suffering of animals. In general, even in the realm of animals, there is killing, bondage, beatings, and various other sufferings. For those who have abandoned the virtuous Dharma of peace, there is the unbearable suffering of eating each other. Thus it is said. They do not stand and walk like humans, but crawl, hence they are called animals. Those belonging to the animal realm are killed by others, such as humans, bound by ropes, and beaten with whips, suffering endless harm from humans and non-humans. Having abandoned the virtue of peace and nirvana, and possessing the qualities of liberation, etc., for those animals who are unsuitable as vessels for rebirth, the ripening of the karma of eating each other is certain, and therefore they possess extremely unbearable suffering. Regarding their individual sufferings, some die for the sake of pearls, wool, and bones, and some die for the sake of meat and hides. Other animals who have no autonomy and have become the tools of gods and humans, such as horses, buffaloes, donkeys, elephants, and cattle, are in turn kicked, struck with hands, whipped, and stabbed with hooks, suffering from being struck and used with these weapons. Third, the suffering of the hungry ghosts. In general, even in the realm of hungry ghosts, the suffering arises from the lack of desire, it is constant and unchangeable. The suffering caused by hunger, thirst, cold, heat, fatigue, and fear is extremely unbearable, and should be understood as such.

One should cultivate the constant and unchanging suffering. Thus it is connected. Among them, constant and unchanging means that there is never an opportunity to obtain desired pleasures, therefore there is no way to avoid suffering. What is it like? Hunger and thirst, winter cold, summer heat, and the fatigue of running around in search of food, and seeing people carrying weapons, etc., the unbearable suffering caused by fear. Now, some of the differences of those sufferings will be explained. Among them, regarding the suffering of hunger and thirst: Some have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, bellies as large as mountains, tormented by hunger. Even if they find a little discarded filth, they have no strength to eat it. Thus it is said. Some have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, but their bellies are as large as mountains, making them difficult to fill, so they are tormented by hunger. Even if they find some discarded filth, such as excrement and urine, they cannot eat it because their mouths are too small. Regarding the ugly body and the burning mouth: Some are skin and bones, naked, like a dried-up palm tree. Some have fire burning from their mouths at night, and they eat the hot sand that falls on the fire. Thus it is said. Some bodies have no flesh, only skin and bones remain, and they are naked without clothes, like the top of a dried-up palm tree, separated from its bark. Some, not during the day but every night, have flames burning from their mouths, and hot sand falls on the burning flames, and they eat the fallen hot sand as food. In order to specifically explain the suffering of the lower beings of the hungry ghosts: Lower beings, pus, blood, and feces, even impure things are hard to find. They glare at each other and fight, swallowing the pus that flows from the ripe sores in their throats. Lower beings, that is, beings with very little merit, even impure things such as pus, feces, and blood are hard to find, let alone good things. However, when they see each other, they become angry and beat each other, and blisters grow on their hands, and they strike each other, and they eat the pus that flows from the ripe sores that grow in their throats as food. Those sufferings...

To further illustrate other sufferings, it is said in the scriptures: "In the Soga season, even the moon becomes hot, and in winter, the sun becomes cold. These trees become fruitless, and just by looking at them, rivers will dry up." This means that these lower castes, in the Soga season, even the moon becomes a cause of heat, and in winter, the sun becomes a cause of cold. They have to endure such suffering of heat and cold, and just by being looked at by them, those trees full of fruit and lush branches will become without branches and fruit, and appear withered. Rivers with eight qualities will also dry up, filled with burning ashes, and impure things filled with worms. How long will they have to endure such suffering? It is said in the scriptures: "Continuously enduring suffering, bound by the rope of evil deeds, some beings will not die even after five thousand or ten thousand years." This means that those beings who continuously endure suffering, some can live to the end of their lifespan, and even if they do not have food for five thousand or ten thousand years, they will not die, because they are firmly bound by the rope of evil deeds. So, what is the cause of suffering such pain? It is said in the scriptures: "Thus, the hungry ghosts receive various sufferings, the cause of which is that people are stingy and greedy. The Buddha said that this is not a noble practice." As mentioned earlier, all the various sufferings such as hunger and thirst suffered by the hungry ghosts are the same kind of suffering, so it is said to be one taste. The reason for obtaining this kind of suffering is that people are accustomed to stinginess and greed, which is also a non-noble practice, that is, the power of unwholesome deeds. As it is said in the Compendium Sutra: "The stingy will be born in the realm of hungry ghosts, and if they are reborn as humans, they will be poor." Fourth, the suffering of the gods: Even in the heavens, the suffering of death and falling from those gods who enjoy great bliss is greater than other sufferings. Therefore, virtuous people will think like this: Eventually exhausted
