Now, since there is no arising and no destruction, it is believed that nirvana is attained by abandoning and extinguishing afflictions and aggregates. Therefore, it is unreasonable for those who assert inherent existence to attain nirvana. Because this would lead to faults, those who assert emptiness do not consider nirvana to be characterized by the cessation of afflictions or aggregates. Therefore, this accusation does not apply to us. Secondly, if those who assert emptiness do not consider nirvana to be characterized by the cessation of afflictions or aggregates, then what kind of characteristics do they believe nirvana possesses? There is no abandonment, there is no attainment, there is no cessation, there is no permanence, there is no stopping, there is no arising, this is called nirvana. Like desire and so on, there is no abandonment; like the fruit of a renunciate, there is no attainment; like aggregates, there is no cessation; like nothing being empty, there is no permanence; by nature, there is no stopping, there is no arising; the emptiness characterized by the pacification of all elaborations, this is called nirvana. Because here, all suffering is completely eliminated. Therefore, for such a phenomenon, which afflictions and aggregates are abandoned and extinguished to attain it? Where would there be conceptual thoughts of afflictions and aggregates? As long as these conceptual thoughts exist, nirvana is not attained. When the mind of a yogi exhausts all elaborations and becomes a state of no arising, then it is said that nirvana is attained. As it is said in the Ratnavali: If nirvana were not unreal, how could it be real? Those who grasp reality and unreality, their exhaustion is called nirvana. Thus it is taught. Thirdly, for those who have not realized the nature of the pacification of conceptual thoughts of nirvana, and who think that nirvana is real and unreal, and both and neither, they are refuted in order. The first of the four views: The Vaibhashikas believe that nirvana is real, permanent, and of the nature of permanence. The Sutrantikas and the Dharmaguptakas believe that it is merely the cessation of aggregates, like the extinguishing of a lamp. Their minds are said to be liberated. The Vatsiputriyas.

These schools hold that nirvana has the nature of both existent and non-existent. Because nirvana lacks body, senses, and consciousness, it is non-existent; and because it possesses the bliss of reliance and consciousness, it is existent. If both existent and non-existent are negated, then the nature of both will also be negated. Therefore, first, the view of existence must be refuted. Here, some Sarvastivadins and others who cling to nirvana as existent say: Nirvana can prevent the continuation of karma, afflictions, and birth, just like a dam prevents the flow of water, and has the nature of existence. Because something that does not exist cannot do this. The rebuttal to this is: Nirvana is not existent, otherwise it would have the nature of aging. Something without aging and death cannot be existent. Nirvana cannot be existent, otherwise it would have the nature of aging. Because existence does not deviate from the nature of aging. Therefore, nirvana would also not be nirvana, because it has the nature of aging, just like consciousness and so on. Why does existence not deviate from aging? Because something without aging and death cannot be existent. Something that is free from aging and death, like a flower in the sky, cannot be existent. Furthermore, if nirvana is existent, then nirvana would become conditioned. There is no existent that is not conditioned, and it does not exist anywhere. If nirvana is existent, then how can nirvana not depend on causes and conditions? An existent that does not depend on causes and conditions does not exist anywhere. If, according to your view, nirvana is existent, then how can nirvana not depend on the aggregation of causes and conditions? It will depend on its own aggregation of causes and conditions, because it is an existent, just like consciousness. Existence depends on its own aggregation of causes
