Commentary on Chapter Twenty-Five. Commentary on Chapter Twenty-Five. Second, refuting the debate on the Nirvana to be attained. First, presenting the prior view, and then refuting it. The first point is: If all these things are empty, then there is no arising and no ceasing. From abandoning and extinguishing what, would one consider it to be Nirvana? Here, the Blessed One taught two types of Nirvana to those who entered the Tathagata's teachings, practiced pure conduct, and cultivated Dharma in accordance with the Dharma: Nirvana with remainder and Nirvana without remainder. The first is like killing all the gangs of robbers and only the village remains, referring to the fact that after destroying all the robbers of afflictions, such as the view of the perishable collection, only the aggregates remain as the basis. The second is like killing the gangs of robbers and destroying the village as well, referring to Nirvana in which the aggregates are also completely extinguished. As it is said: Where the body is destroyed and feelings cease, all consciousness is separated, the aggregates of actions are pacified, and the consciousness is extinguished. And as it is said: When the body that does not shrink back receives feelings, his mind is completely liberated, like a lamp that has gone out. As it is said. These two types of Nirvana, if afflictions and aggregates cease, it is reasonable. But when these things are all empty, and there is no arising and no ceasing at all, from abandoning and extinguishing what, would one consider it to be Nirvana? Therefore, they say that things exist by their own nature. Second, refuting, revealing that the fault applies to oneself. Explaining the nature of Nirvana. Refuting the attachment to Nirvana. Refuting the attachment to the Tathagata. Revealing the equality of Samsara and Nirvana. And stopping the debate on Nirvana, these six points. The first point is: If all these things are not empty, then there is no arising and no ceasing. From abandoning and extinguishing what, would one consider it to be Nirvana? If one thinks that Nirvana can be attained from the cessation of afflictions and aggregates, and thinks that these things are not empty, but are established by their own nature, then, since there is no change in self-nature, then
