Because dependent arising is not born of its own nature, it relies on the wisdom of the noble ones. From non-cessation to non-identity, it is distinguished by eight distinctions. This is precisely to lead those to be tamed to attain nirvana, pacifying the proliferation of expression and what is expressed, and by abandoning erroneous concepts such as mind and mental factors, to attain the peace free from all the afflictions of birth, aging, sickness, and death, teaching in a non-inverted manner. Therefore, the Buddha is regarded as the supreme among those who speak of the path to liberation. This is because the teacher himself has comprehended the dependent arising as taught by the Thus-Gone One, so he is regarded as the only one who speaks of the path to liberation in a non-inverted manner. Furthermore, he has realized that all other proponents, such as Brahma and Ishvara, speak like the babblings of children, without any meaning. Although countless distinctions of dependent arising are observed here, only eight distinctions are listed because self and other schools, as well as worldly people, have the strongest attachment to these eight distinctions, so they become the main factors of contention. The previous refutation of cessation is to show that there is no fixed order of priority between arising and cessation. As it is said: If birth comes first, and aging and death come later, then there would be birth without aging and death, and birth even before death. How dependent arising lacks cessation, etc., is explained by all the treatises. Secondly, regarding the nature of the treatise to be entered, it includes: briefly stating the vow to prevent birth; extensively refuting views contrary to non-birth; dispelling objections to non-birth; the basis of distinction of non-birth, which is the nature of dependent arising; and teaching the benefits of realizing dependent arising, in five aspects. The first aspect is: Now, the teacher intends to teach the excellent distinctions of dependent arising, such as non-cessation. Therefore, he thinks that by preventing birth, it will be easier to prevent cessation, etc., so he first begins to write the treatise on preventing birth. When others examine birth, if they think it arises from self, from other, from both, or from no cause, then all are unreasonable. Like this: Not from self, not from other, not from both, not from no cause. In whatever thing, there is no birth.

There is also no origination. As the Samkhyas say, from the self-nature of the effect, whatever external or internal things, in any place, time, or ultimate view, origination never exists. Because if the self is not established, it will not become a producer; and if it is established, there is no need for origination, so re-origination is meaningless. If it originates from its own nature, it does not depend on other conditions, so the cause of origination will never be incomplete. If it does not depend on time, there is no obstruction, then the origination of the same thing will become endless. As it is said in the Madhyamakavatara: "If that arises from that, what little can there be? It is also not reasonable for what has already arisen to arise again." And so on, it should be determined from these statements. As the Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas say, from other causes and conditions, whatever things originate anywhere, it never exists, because it is the same as other. In that case, thick darkness would arise from the flame, and from all causes and non-causes, all effects and non-effects would arise. As it is said: "If another arises dependent on another, then thick darkness would arise from the flame, and everything would arise from everything, because for all non-producers, otherness is the same." As it is said. As the Jains say, from both self and other, whatever things originate anywhere, it never exists, because for both sides, the stated faults will be incurred. As it is said: "Origination from both is also unreasonable, because the faults already stated will fall upon it." Thus it is said. As the Lokayatas say, from no cause, whatever things originate anywhere, it never exists, because like flowers in the sky, no things will appear on the visible path, and the effort to engage in agriculture and commerce for the sake of fruit becomes meaningless. As it is said: "If it were to arise only from no cause, then the people of the world would not collect seeds, etc., through hundreds of ways in order to obtain fruit." Thus it is said. Here, the teacher Legden says that merely with a proposition that does not state reasons or examples,
