Refutation of the opponent's view: If cause and effect are different entities, then the idea that "in some causes there is effect, or there is no effect" would be reasonable. If someone says that the effect is only the nature that is non-different from the cause, that is also unreasonable. If the effect is the nature of the cause, then the cause is not its own nature. How can an effect arising from something that is not its own nature be the nature of the cause? If someone thinks that the effect, such as cloth, is the nature or essence of the cause, such as threads, then the causes such as threads do not have any self-nature at all, because if their own parts are separated, no self-nature can be found. Therefore, how can the effect, such as cloth, arising from something that is not its own nature, that is, from causes whose self-nature is not established, be the nature of causes such as threads? Because the cause itself has no self-nature, the effect is not the nature of the cause. If someone says that the effect will become the nature of non-cause, then when the cloth is not the nature of the threads, the effect produced by the nature of materials that are not its cause (such as reeds, etc.), that is, the cloth, does not exist, because it is contradictory. If someone says that because there is a distinction between cause and non-cause, the effect also exists, then, because there is no effect, how can non-cause become cause? If the effect exists, then it can be said that "this is the cause of this, and this is not the cause of this," but as mentioned above, because there is no effect, how can the distinction between cause and non-cause exist? Therefore, things themselves do not arise by their own nature. As the Noble Jewel Source Sutra says: "Where there is no wisdom of emptiness, it is like the trace of a bird in the sky. That which has no self-nature, it will never be the cause of another. That whose self-nature cannot be found, how can the self-natureless be a condition for another? What does the self-natureless produce? This cause was taught by the Sugata." Thus it is said. Commentary on the first chapter of the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way, Examination of Conditions, is completed. Explanation of the first chapter.
