It is not like that. To focus on an existing dharma is merely to show non-existence. If a dharma has no object, how can there be an object? If one considers whether the condition of an object is existent or non-existent, it is meaningless to contemplate the condition of an object for the mind and mental factors that existed before the object, because its own nature has no object, but it has already been established before that. Therefore, for the dharma of the mind and mental factors that existed previously, it is only that you, of your own volition, say that it is without an object and with an object. Apart from that, there is not the slightest connection between this and the object. If one contemplates focusing on a non-existent dharma, if there is no focus on a non-existent dharma, then how can its focus exist? Therefore, the nature of the condition of an object is also conventional truth, not ultimate truth. Third, refuting the nature of the immediately preceding condition: Furthermore, the cause that immediately after the cessation of the cause becomes the condition for the production of the effect, that is, considering the nature of the similar immediately preceding condition, this is also unreasonable. If the dharmas are not produced, then destruction is also unreasonable. Therefore, the immediately preceding is unreasonable. If it is destroyed, then what is the cause? This is only said because of the combination. The explanation is: If it is destroyed, then what is the cause? Therefore, the immediately preceding is unreasonable. This is explained by reversing the order. In this regard, if the dharmas of the effect, such as sprouts, are not produced, then the destruction of the cause, such as seeds, is also unreasonable, because the cause of the destruction of the cause is the production of the effect. If it is thought that the effect is not produced and the seed is destroyed and disappears, then what is the cause of the production of the sprout? What is the cause of the destruction of the seed? Because it is unreasonable for a sprout to be produced without a seed, and it is also unreasonable for a seed to be destroyed without a sprout being produced. When the effect is produced, the cause has no function. Therefore, the cause that immediately after the cessation of the cause becomes the condition for the production of the effect, this is unreasonable as the nature of the immediately preceding condition. Alternatively, in "not from oneself" and so on, production is prohibited. If the dharmas are not produced, then destruction is also unreasonable, because destruction depends on previous production. Therefore,

Therefore, when the cause ceases, the immediate condition for the arising of the result should not be considered the immediate cause. Furthermore, if it ceases, what is the cause? It is like a crow that cannot make a sound after it dies. Alternatively, the previous explanation can be applied. Fourth, refuting the definition of the adhipati-pratyaya (dominant condition): If someone thinks that "because there is this, this arises, and this is its master," this is considered the definition of the adhipati-pratyaya. But this is only conventional, not ultimately true. Because of the selflessness of things: Of things that are without inherent existence, why is existence not ultimately real? Because of this, this arises, this statement is not reasonable. Things arise dependently, so they are without inherent existence like illusions. The existence of things without inherent existence, why is it not ultimately real? Therefore, saying "because there is this cause, this result arises" is not reasonable, not a true definition of the adhipati-pratyaya. Therefore, even from the definition, a true condition cannot be established. Third: If it is thought that because one can observe cloth etc. arising from threads etc., then those are its conditions. Then, observing cloth etc. arising from threads etc. is merely a conventional truth fabricated by conceptual thought, not an ultimate truth. Because: The result is not present in the conditions, either separately or together. If it is not present in the conditions, how can it arise from them? The result, cloth, is not present in any of the conditions, such as threads and weaving tools, either separately or together. Because it is not seen. If it were present, then the weaver's effort to produce cloth from those conditions would be meaningless. How can the cloth, which is not present in the conditions such as threads, arise from those conditions? Why can't it arise? If it can arise from those conditions even without the result, then why can't the result, cloth, arise from non-conditions such as reeds? Because both are the same in that neither has cloth. Second, the result is the nature of the condition.
